    <laugh> diatribe

I read all of your posts. Didn't see any apology for your overreaction to the OP. Quite the opposite, you seem to think your first post was justified.

You know what, I'm with you on that.

I'm not racist, I'm not homophobic, but I'm not taking any chances. I'm locking myself in, and having supplies flown in by Waitrose so there's no chance of me going out and offending anyone.

Oh wait, damn, there's the internet! What a totally weird world it has become.

It served the purpose of getting this thread started and some sensible discussion resulted.

It is indeed a strange world where a throwaway comment (I'm not aware of what was said but I strongly doubt it was meant to seriously offend Jerome) on an internet forum can lead to you getting a criminal record and destroy your life.

Why is it fair that a feminist can say something disparaging about men yet even referring to a black person as black and adding an offensive word on the end is a criminal offence?

Again, not condoning racism just think some people need to get a thicker skin and deal with it. I'd imagine I've probably had worst stuff said directly to my face at somepoint in my life then a guy saying something on Facebook to a millionaire footballer who will probably forget about it after a day.

As did one side of my family, doesn't make it right and contributed to significant prejudices, if you can't see that there a differnce between calling someone a **** or calling some a ****, but prefacing it with a skin colour changes the implicit and explcit meaings then maybe JWM proposed educational programme is needed for more folk.

it has nothing to do with the impact it may have on a single individual , but the wider message it conveys. Indeed, the footballers in question, may not be bothered, but there are broader societal implications

Because it was an Ipswich fan that did it. So it's inevitable that Ipswich would be mentioned. There is a clear Ipswich connection. Obviously.

Exactly. It is topical. And relevant that it is an Ipswich fan.

But it in no way reflects upon other Ipswich fans.

If anything, a part of me thinks the relevance of it being an Ipswich fan is that it emphasises that the guy lost control given the result against derby rivals. That doesn't excuse him, but it does add an element of understandable emotion to his behaviour.

Do you agree Rob that an education course based around Ethnicity and Diversity awareness would be far better than just simply handing him with a fine and a slap on the wrists!

Oh dear! Well, thanks for the lecture (however unnecessary it may have been).

I suppose in retrospect my remarks were rather flippant especially when highlighted in this fashion. Note to self - never indulge in this kind of 'debate' when squiffy, it'll come back to haunt you. <ok>

The reason for posting this thread was not to have a go at Ipswich supporters had it been any other opposing fan I'd have still posted it because the racist remark was aimed at one of our players, and the news about it had only just been reported on the Radio & Web. For the record although I am Norwich Supporter through and through, I do have friends at a church I attend who are Ipswich supporters and they invited me round to watch the Norwich v Ipswich game on their TV when I was unable to get to the game at Carrow Road in March.
