Former Liverpool FC player Andrea Dossena was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting at Harrods.

The 33-year-old Italian, who now plays for League One club Leyton Orient, was arrested at the Knightsbridge department store on Tuesday afternoon.

A 31-year-old woman - believed to be his girlfriend - was also arrested at the world-famous shop.

Both were later bailed pending further enquiries.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers were called to the store, on Brompton Road, yesterday.

The spokesman said: “Police arrested a 33-year-old male and a 31-year-old woman on April 7 on suspicion of shoplifting at Harrods.

“They were taken to a west London police station.

“Both the man and woman have been bailed to a date in late April, pending further enquiries.”

Dossena signed for Liverpool FC in 2008 and scored his first goal for the team on March 10, 2009 against Real Madrid.

Four days later he scored his first goal in the Premier League in the side’s 4-1 victory against Manchester United.

He signed for Napoli in 2010 and later played for Palermo and Sunderland, before joining Leyton Orient in November last year.

Leyton Orient were contacted by the ECHO and are expected to comment later today.

Signing for Liverpool really has ruined him...

Apparently his agent has said that Dossena's son had his own bag and had put a children's book in it and this set the alarms off. It must have been a very expensive book to have a security tag on it!

My eldest lad when he was a toddler shoplifted a few things. We got home from Asda one day to find he's taken two jars of meat paste sandwich spread stuff [urgggh] and put one in each of his little coat pockets. He was probably about 18 months old at the time and thought it was great fun reaching shelves from the trolley kiddie seat and throwing stuff in the trolley, once he discovered some things fit in his pockets that was where they went, much to our embarrassment - and now his. Good job we didn't grocery shop in Harrods <laugh>

I agree otherwise there'd be more stories about what he supposedly lifted. Didn't Richard Madeley supposedly take champagne from Tescos - they always want to tell you what the items were so why not this time? I'm going with the child's book theory - I await rivals telling us it was multi thousand pound items because ........ he used to play for Liverpool <ok>

people make mistakes and the scanner beeps all the time. usually if you have over zealous guards and a store like harrods they'd rather lose a customer for life than actually deal with it properly.

If I had a penny for every time my eldest lad carried something out of the shop when he was a kid I'd have a few quid. Luckily I was never stopped over it and always returned said items.. unless the item was a half eaten bar or chocolate with the other half smeared over his face, then all one can do is shrug <laugh>

They've probably got a house full of them - it's books they're short of <laugh>

  18. Unfortunately, that something parents have taken advantage of over the years so it is no longer deemed a mistake, you get charged for shoplifting nowadays as the child is your responsibility.

One of mine (can't remember which one it was) as done it once but that's all. I've forgotten a couple of times about items we'd put on the buggy before too <laugh>

Alll these places have cameras and a review of one showing the kid taking something and the parent not being aware will not result in a conviction you'd think. It's not that simple surely as it is your kid so you are guilty.?

  20. I guess if the camera is there then you would have an argument, probably depends how often it happens. My mrs' (nm) niece went through a stage of stealing something nearly every time they went shopping. Her mother knew about it but it still happened every time. IMO, she should have made sure it didn't happen because she knew about it. Simply checking the child before leaving the shop would do it, obviously should be doing more to stop it happening in the first place mind.
