I see O'Shea and Catts made it in to Garth Crooks team of the week but what does he know!! Can't split Defoe and Serb their work rates were immense.

I think Defoe was the pick, but really this was a team effort, all pulling together. A special mention for JOS, he gets some stick from me at times, but yesterday he played a captains game, and we need him more than ever now to lead us to safety.

This. I've seen lot of Defoe over the years and never ever seen him put in a defencive shift like that. He was simply outstanding. I like what dick is asking of him. He did it very well. A side to his game I never thought he had in him. I was very impressed.

Seb for me, he was the main guy pushing us forward to press, was at the heart of everything good and worked his nuts off. He and Wickham looked knackered at the end, both covered a hell of a lot of ground.

Seb is always worth having on the pitch as he can score a free kick or put in a quality set piece as well as working really hard. Raely gives the ball away and if he does he gets it back.

Gomez for me is out problem position. Catts does his job, Seb does his job but the Gomez role needs to be the creative one and he does not offer enough in a creative role. Our 3 strikers can all score goals but they are just not getting enough service. Maybe AJ could play that role? we need someone that can pick a pass and be calm in possession, someone would can dictate the attacking play.

Giacca or Alvarez play this role, if only they could get out of the treatment room, I think Fletch or AJ could play this role at a stretch, but we could do with a specialist in this position to rely kick on. With this three man attack used by DAVO so far I am wondering where AJ will fit in.

did you not see Catts spraying the ball around like he was StevieG? two or three times he played an inch perfect cross-field pass. no reason he can't do it more often. if we had someone who could do his defensive work (bridcutt? rodwell?) i'd suggest moving Catts further forward. Definitely my MotM from Sunday. He's been a massive miss recently.

Catts has a great long pass in his locker. That one to wickham 1st half was class. If Gerrard had done that it'd be big news.

He needs to cut out the passing errors and increase his ratio of forward passes compared to sideways/backwards before we can say he's anywhere near as good with the ball as he is without it

Old eggnog's got them moving the ball forward a lot quicker now and I'm sure he'll be encouraging Catts and the rest to look for those long balls more now. There were a couple of right crackers on Sunday.

He'd probably give them a right old bollocking for any unnecessary sideways/backwards, spanish style crap now!

Think there is a time to retain possession but we'd forgotten how to attack in any other way.

I don't even necessarily mean long passes from Catts, a short pass into the hole or the striker's feet is what we had stopped doing. Seb needs to do it more too. Gomez to me seems to frequently look for a penetrative pass to usually pva, he has the right idea.
