It's a tricky one alright. All depends why he's stalling on the contract. IF there's any chance of him staying, you should keep him. Any replacement will cost bucks and the wages will be fair bit aswell. Even if you get a cheaper emerging talent, if they're any good you'll face the same problem a year or two from now. I'm not sure it's even about the money with him tbh.

  3. I've not seen anyone write him off. I've seen most say he's a good young player that has the potential to become very good but he's been poor this season, something you just said yourself. No Liverpool fan wants to lose him but every player has a price. Suarez being the perfect example; no Liverpool fan wanted to see someone of Luis' ability leave the club but other reasons meant it was accepted.

There is a reason the club have offered a twenty year old £100k per week <laugh>

EXACTLY! You lot can't have it both way. My point is that regardless of how he's been this season, IF you believe he is better and will get better (considering he clearly has talent and technical ability), why are most of you all too quick to say "ah sell him, he aint that good".

The club accepts that it will gain more from Sterling staying than him leaving at whatever price. So it should just accept that it is not in the driving seat and negoatiate a deal that Sterling will accept.

If Sterling is pushed into a corner where he will lose face if he signs a new contract and winds down the current one, then the biggest loser will be the club. They'll have an unhappy star player and will lose 40+ million.

The macho stance taken by the club is poppycock. "Sterling is not leaving in summer." yes fine but what if he doesn't sign ??

I think it's down to people doubting his commitment to the club and we may well be wrong tbf to Sterling.

because most of us are only wanting to sell him if it's for big big money. ie 30/40+. He's good - but not good enough for us to make him our highest earner and to fawn all over him and, above all, he is replaceable - certainly with £40m in the bank.

  9. Because that's not been said <laugh>

What's been said is, sell him if he won't sign a new deal, he's been poor this season anyway. That is different. No one is saying he won't be a quality player so no one is having it both ways as you suggest.

The Liverpool boss added that the club had not given him permission to speak to BBC Sport and that he thought it was a "mistake" to carry out the interview.
"There was no permission from us," he said. "He will learn. We all make mistakes in life, especially when we are young.
"I think the kid has tried to put off all talk about contract and money. For now hopefully the focus will be on football."

good to see him slapped down. i did say yesterday that i felt one or two players would be giving him the cold shoulder. i reckon rodgers once he has the numbers needs to ark him on a bench in a game and say.... like that slor do you... you'll be there if you move or if you try to run your contract down

Rodgers saying he's going nowhere. Sounds like bluff to me. If a good offer comes in and Sterling wants out, there's little choice imo unless it's Arsenal with a 50 +1 offer <laugh>

The All-Seeing Eye that is RHC (or his mate, to be exact) has told us all along that Sterling is going nowhere, so it must be true.

On another note, why are so many on here so anxious to jump all over Rodgers every time something isn't to their liking?

Too many Sterling threads - he's not that good.

  16. As far as the club and Brod are concerned, he will stay at the club. At least, that's how they should be thinking anyway. Therefore, anything coming out the club should suggest this too, including RHCs mate.

What Raheem and his agent think is an entirely different matter.

I actually think all parties have handled this well so far. No one as done anything out of order bar speaking in public.

Raheem Sterling: Liverpool forward staying - Brendan Rodgers

"Liverpool are one of the superpowers of football and if the owners don't want to sell, they don't have to," said Rodgers.

Sterling has two years left on a contract worth £35,000 a week.

Rodgers added: "Concentration should be on his football. If his ambition is to win trophies that's aligned with what we do here."

You're fans though. What do you want money or success? Because I just don't see the logic here. I think (not you necessarily) that everyone wants to put a brave face on this. He may not be good enough now, but it would be like Barcelona saying in 2006, "well Messi's good but not good enough..." He's no Messi but it's obvious the lad has class. You can't expect the finished article at age 20. BUT by giving him what he wants (whether that's monetry or something else that he wants) what you'd be investing in is a) a quality - potentially world class player and b) stability in your squad you can build on. What will you achieve by selling him? £40m-£50m in the banks doesn't equate to a long term plan. Re: your point about highest earner, does that matter? I think in modern football, a PL side consistently in the CL will have to break their wage policy simply bcos they need to keep the players that will be pivotal to getting them (and keeping them) there.
