    Bookies :emoticon-0164-cash:

The Portuguese side is pretty unrecognisable, to be honest.
Cape Verde do have Platini in their side, too... <whistle>

Carroll with the winner against the Czechs, Pritchard the assist for the tying goal in a winning game against Germany, when he came on with England losing, Townsend with the tying goal and Mason with the assist against Italy, Eriksen with a beautiful assist for the winner against a country 100 times Denmark’s size. And that’s just the games I was keeping track of. If we did have no significant injuries (Carroll will apparently be fine), it really has been a banner break. Oh, and didn’t Kane do something?

    Phil or Gary :)

Southgate may well suit under 21 management but Hodgson has at least had some success in his career and managed to take Fulham to a European final with Zamora, which in itself is impressive! Basically as much as I dislike Hodgson, he understands football and done a good job with Switzerland, just if we are to sack him, lets at least bring in a credible successor, not some pundit who has never managed.

Fulham were boring in each game until they conceded and had to throw men forward to rescue the game though, to be fair.

Anyway, Eddie Howe or Mark Warburton would be the names I'd throw into the hat, both English and understand good attacking football. If we went for a foreign manager, well we could all list a dozen that could fit the bill, couldn't we? Anyway, it's too late for all this now, Roy's our man until the FA say otherwise.

Two graduates of the Spurs academy combine to score for England - the Southampton Master Race won't like that!

Its a shame we couldn't be boring in each game and get to a European cup final by rescuing the game. Anyway I'm no fan of Hodgson but when he is replaced there is more chance that his successor will be a failure and have us playing boring football, even if he comes into the job with a reputation for playing attacking football as its a big transition from club management to international management.

Much like NSIS, I want to see Hoddle return but yes its too late now as we're stuck with Hodgson for the time being so lets not be negative as Europe is scared of this current England team.

Just had a quick look at their results as I remember their comebacks but Fulham knocked out the holders Shakhtar Donetsk, Italian runners up Juventus and German champions Wolfsburg so YV I know it may be difficult but Hodgson must get some credit!

I don't think he's a bad manager and it was a great achievement to get Fulham to the final but what I've said from the start is that he's a boring manager, he plays boring football and it was an uninspired choice from the FA.

AVB has achieved a lot in a short time, breaking records and winning trophies but that doesn't mean you're wrong to say he was a bad choice to manage us.

So by my count, the last two times Townsend has cut in and shot with his right foot, he’s scored by putting it in the side netting. The last 500 times he’s cut in and shot with his left foot, he’s either put it in Row Z or the chest of the keeper.

That’s the maddening thing about him. It’s not like there’s some pattern to his successes and failures which could serve as a guide to help make better use of him.

I think that every single forward we have is better on the left or in the center.

It’s a nice illustration of why we’re scoring and giving up so many. Mason makes a great tackle to win the ball, giving Townsend a decent chance. When he doesn’t win the ball, he can’t do anything to help the defenders.

    I like the picture below.

What about Mourinho as England manager? He'd be playing for a draw before the whistle blew.
What did Danny use to say? 'Let's equalize before the other team scores!'

I like that. I used to tell myself I was 0-40 down whenever I was 40-0 up. Most of us can’t stand prosperity.

Yeah, great to see their reactions, Townsend went over to thank Mason for getting him the ball and the other two were the first to react and celebrate with them.

Nice to see that Kane & Andros haven't joined the tattoos everywhere brigade - yet, anyway!

It's not for the manager to be exciting. A steady reliable manager is what's required for an international team. The players by definition should be good and the simpler the system the better. Good players work things out for themselves managers just get in the way. Kane produced our most dangerous moments not because of what a manager told him to do but because he is 'quite good' at football, has a brain and knows when to pass and where to pass.

When Townsend was at QPR I followed some of their games, mainly because of Redknapp but when Townsend was in the side he initially used to act as a traditional winger but after a few games would start to drift in the centre. I thought that was him expanding his play at a early age but as it turns out, that was him developing into the player he is, and he believes cutting inside and long range shooting is what he excels at, as otherwise he wouldn't be attempting these shots so frequently.

Although I think your count is a little out as I thought it was 505 times, not 500 but easy mistake to make.

Funny, as when Townsend was at QPR i said he should be given a chance while most fans said he wasn't good enough for the squad, then when he was given a chance the fans that said he wasn't good enough where happy he was here, while I went the opposite way and saw his selfish play and never had the same faith in his ability.

Still, he is clearly more suited to international football and thats not a bad thing, as many players dream of being able to make an impact for their country, just look at Le Tissier who was magic at club level but never had a chance at international level while Townsend is hopeless at club level but performs for his country.

All teams, be that at club or international level play in the style of their manager. What you're describing are player decisions and yes regardless of who is manager, players will make their own decisions at varying times in the game, but as a team, they play to the managers instructions and tactics which can either hold players back or allow them more freedom to make better decisions.

Plus a manager may have a different style at international football to club football because they aren't up to the job of international football so if they look out of their depth, it shows within the team as we saw at the world cup.

The only issue with International football is that its more difficult to implement a style due to players playing club football with teams that play a different style and the manager is restricted to how often they see the players as a group, thats why Hoddle received so much praise as a manager (from the players & fans) as they recognised the style of play he implemented and how much freedom he gave players to express themselves, especially in the big games.
