Premier League - John Barnes: I can't get a managerial job in football because I'm black
John Barnes claims he is struggling to get a job in management because he is black.

John Barnes believes his managerial opportunities have been limited by his skin colour

The formerLiverpool star's last managerial job was at Tranmere in 2009. He lasted four months before being sacked. The 51-year-old has previously been in charge of Celtic and the Jamaica national team.

Barnes insisted that had he been white he would have got another job.

"A white manager loses his job and gets another job, he loses his job, he gets another job. Very few black managers can lose their job and get another job," he told John Barnes: Sports Life Stories, to be broadcast on ITV4 on Tuesday.

"What I can judge it from is by looking at society. How many black people are there in the higher echelons of any industry? We can talk about journalism, we can talk about politics. So why should football be any different?"

Barnes' first job in management, at Celtic for the 1999-2000 season, ended in the wake of an embarrassing Scottish Cup defeat to Inverness.

But he denied that job was too much too soon.

He said: "Well, if it comes now at 51, I don't think it will be any different. It's more to do with the perception of my ability to do the job, because there's a certain perception of who can make a good manager."

Barnes' former England team-mate Ian Wright agreed that the colour of his skin was counting against Barnes.

The former Arsenal man said: "With someone of John Barnes' ability and stature, to not have worked more in the game with something that he's desperate to do. I don't know what else it can be?"

Barnes also talked about the guilt he felt after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Barnes, who attended the funerals and met the families of victims following the tragedy, said: "I felt this guilt that they were coming to watch me.

"I know that they were coming to watch everybody else, and it's Liverpool Football Club. It's an irrational thought.

"So I felt this guilt. And I wasn't sure how they would react because had that been my loved one, I wouldn't want to go and meet footballers or the football team, or ever watch football again."

They never tire of playing the race card. Ability seems to be irrelevant.

Complete crap. Does he really think clubs turn down good managers because they're black? No, they turn them down because they're ****e...

Outside of the world of football... My Missus works as a dinner lady/kitchen assistant in 2 schools - one (3 days a week) where our kids go - great - she loves it - the other has an african woman as the cook.

The african woman has a major attitude problem and speaks to everyone in the same demeaning tone. She is very abrupt and not a very nice person generaly - she has been "made aware of the issues people have had with her and every time she plays the "Race" card. EVERY time - she is quite a nasty piece of work to be fair - but it;s onlyh because she's black!

Interesting thing about John Barnes - has he managed or coached at the top level anywhere? Might the fact that the answer is "No" to that be the reason he can;t manage in the PL rather than the fact that he's black?

He doesn`t seem to have tried very hard to get better.

Which jobs has he applied for as assistant so he can learn?
    Lower leagues?
    Abroad?
    Anything?

Seems like he thinks he`s entitled to a job. If he was good enough he`d get one.

He's not useless, he'd serve as a very good punch bag, if only he knew his limitations as a living organism.

Aye, and got dumped out of the Scottish Cup at home to Inverness. Cally-Thistle hadn't even been a league club for more than five minutes!

Chris Hughton gets sacked from mags gets the Birmingham job, does well gets the Norwich job, gets sacked gets the Brighton job. F all to do with skin colour.

I hate this argument and always say; its like complaining there aren't enough white runners in the 100m final.
