I think John Terry could be considered a great player, despite the fact the bloke is clearly a complete and utter bellend. I'm certain he'd have got into the starting XI of most international sides during his career.
Depends on your definition of great. Could be to be the best player in your position ever or just great enough to play for a best in the world team in your own era. Can't see terry as getting into the best ever but maybe at some point in his career he may have been one of the best in his era. Definitely a bellend of the highest order though world class in that respect.
I think Messi already falls into the greats category. He has broken pretty much every European and Spanish recording going and still has at least 6 years left at the very top of his game! If he were to add a World Cup to his already ridiculous achievements, then there would be no doubt. Even with out it there is no doubt in my mind.
Terry's controversial and his dishonourble discharge from the national side means he'll never get that sort of recognition. However on the pitch he is a superb player especially for Chelsea but for englad too. I'd throw Ashley Cole into the same category great left back, too disliked.
It does. Generally I link it to having the money and time to get on to trouble from a young age. It has a serious effect of people's development. On england greats there are also undeniably great players who never really managed to demonstrate it in an england shirt. Scholes comes to mind in this category or potential Lampard.
Not sure if this is restricted to English players? If not, Pirlo, Stoichkov, and Ibrahimović are all worthy of a shout out
I saw a debate about people who were "masters of their craft or art", and for football Pirlo instantly sprung to mind.
But what a great finisher, Dave. Not sure you needed to track back so much in those days...though I'll be led by you on that score
Talking of great finishers, Ted 'Super' MacDougall did **** all but give him the ball in the 18 yard box ..... BANG ! He certainly knew where the onion bag was
If someone could score the volume of goals he did I really don't know why it matters, or why you would need him to do anything else? Surely it's a bit like saying all a keeper does is save goals isn't it?
Keepers have to pretty much stay in their area, but strikers can offer a lot more than goals and assists! Our best striker in recent years has been Grant Holt, think back how often it was he blocking an opponent's goal-scoring attempt! The man was a legend of the very highest order!
