Was it a good goal? Can you describe the build up to it?

Nearly as good as the one he put on a plate for Kane

They'll have to make do with a secondary article about Rooney scoring one and putting in a lovely cross for Sterling to almost miss from a yard out!

Sterling played well, I don't mind saying that. You lot would rather accept a rogering than say anything positive about Fat Wazza. Your bitterness is delightful! Can't imagine how much it will burn you up when he breaks Sir Bobby Charlton's record!

Because you absolutely ****ing hate the fat, granny shagging, multiple title winning Blue and he'll be remembered as an England legend unlike Stevie Me who will be remembered for his various back passes to let in the opposition.

True, but I think you're confusing contempt for him with caring about what he does.

Wow, like yeah - his legendary bans, injuries and chronic bad form at every international tournament since 2006. Legend indeed.

I'm no great Rooney fan but the fakht is when he's England's top scorer he will have to be categorised as an England legend. To be fair Gerrard has probably set an England record as well. Most assists for the opposition.

  11. Fair play to Rooney but if he was as good as the others in the England scoring charts, he'd have overtaken them a few years ago. England play a lot more games nowadays. Stick to goals per game records if you want to compare England strikers of all time.

Same goes for the disco with caps. How many recent players have made the top twenty?

Robbie Fowler didn't manage 30 caps or 10 goals for England but Liverpool fans refer to him as God. What went wrong?

I'm old enough to have seen Charlton glide about a football pitch, head up, never needing to look at the ball as he sprayed 40-yard passes or 25 yard thunderbolts from either foot (ffs, you're the United fan - you should be saying this), and just because Rooney has accumulated several tap-ins against Andorra, Lichstentein and San Marino doesn't mean he's the right to breathe the same air as the man who was one of Shankly's favourite ever players.

we never gauge the right to become one of our deities by what a player does in an England shirt.

At no point did I say breaking Sir Bobby's record would make Rooney the better player, he's not remotely in Sir Bobby's class. But it will make him an England legend.

I agree that many of Rooney's goals have been against poor opposition but your memory is failing you if you think England teams of previous generations didn't also play easy games.

Rooney: "A lot of teams will be looking at this team around Europe and will be frightened."

While you can only beat what's in front of you and England have looked more solid since the world cup, I don't think any of the half-decent teams will be scared of us. We might have more of an idea after the Italy game I suppose.

  18. Fair enough. In that case, I think the general feelings are of sadness that the records of the great players of the past will be broken by a generally agreed lesser player. Its a sadness of what international football as become.

Well, to be fair, the players were fantastic and showed tremendous character. We have some wonderful technicians and...no, wait, sorry, wrong team.
