The banners are great, they'd be better if you could actually see them when people were seated. The Cobb Morley banner is probably only visible to a tiny minority close to the North Stand or via the Hubble Telescope.
It was meant to be as high as the Bruce on (on the window frame) but they positioned it lower for some reason
I still think size is the issue. The Cobb Morley banner looks much smaller than the 'In Bruce we trust' banner. Not sure if it is? If I hadn't seen the banner on here, I wouldn't have seen it, in fact knowing it was in place, it was still bloody difficult to spot.
Yeah it is smaller but it's all we could do for the money we had (apart from it being bloody hard to paint at 8' tall X 12' wide), now that we know what we can do and the sizes people want we know for the future. I personally looked at these as experimental banners
How are the stadium designers getting on with their (expensive?) deliberations? Can the banners span the stanchions, as, in all seriousness, the whole 'acting as a sail' objection really does stretch credibility. Is it (more realistically) a question of how to secure or whether or not the fabric would be of the right quality? It's a shame as it is a great concept that just needs a little bit of jiggling. The space between stanchions must have appeared about right for it to have been mentioned on here, so can pulleys, cleats and halyards be fitted either side - there are plenty of non-intrusive fixings available. If necessary, which I doubt, vent holes/flaps could be incorporated to reduced drag on the flag fixing points (the weakest link - certainly not the stanchions). Do we need to raise a bit more dosh to finish it properly?
As I understand it, they're still waiting for your engineers report. It'd be best if you considered all of the issues involved, rather than just trying to amplify one of the factors though. Utilising those gaps is something that the club have and are considering, but they form part of larger planning and priorities. The structural element is an issue. It may need no work at all, but it would need a structural engineers report to prove that. A part of the issue is the logistics of raising and lowering them as the different tenants use the stadium.
No need for the cynicism, but not unexpected. I amplified nothing, just bumped something that is now a saga. What are all of the factors? They (the banners) need to be seen, otherwise what is the point? There are easy ways to hoist them and take them down - common sense would tell me (may be not you) that they would not be left up, for a couple of reasons. If someone would focus the engineers, I am sure your aims, and how best to achieve them, would quickly become obvious. It really should be almost as easy as hoisting a flag. Don't make this an argument, unless you need one.
I'm not being cynical, I'm being patronising, which is polite given the barbs in your replies, including the one above. It's you creating a saga, which seams to be your forte, as dull as it is. You ignore or don't accept replies, then accuse people of making circular arguments. It's boring. You picked up on one minor point and got it wrong. Correcting you on that isn't me looking for an argument, it was me trying to correct your attempted mischief. I'm wanting people to offer as many suggestions as possible, because in the first place, it's everyone's banner, and hopefully more will follow. I'm certain the club will listen to any reasonable suggestions, because I think they're as happy with the ideas as we are. As I've repeatedly said, the club have been very helpful. They wanted to put the banners in the gaps, but it couldn't be done for a variety of minor reasons, including getting it approved by structural engineers which the time frame and other commitments meant it wasn't feasible. In these letigious times, I can understand the concern. My understanding is that it was not the club that highlighted the potential issue. If you'd like to volunteer your services to put a bundle of banners up and down, fold and store them each game, I'l happily mention it to the club. They're okay looking after two, but especially when there's a quick turn round in games, I don't feel it's fair to expect them to do it for more, especially in less accessible positions. At the moment, we'll get much further looking at alternatives, such as passing them over the crowd (as was one original option) or making more smaller ones that groups could use during the game. If anyone has any thoughts on methods the flags could be hung, or alternative ways of displaying them, please shout out. Sometimes it's easy to think an idea's too simple to have not been considered, so feel afraid to mention it, but it could just be the solution.
Mauled - the Cobb Morley banner looks excellent, the picture is distinguishable from the south stand, but the writing is not. You can only make out 'HULL'. The design leaving so much blank space does look good on the picture posted on here, but if you find yourself making anything similar again I'd recommend using the space to make the writing as visible as possible.
I think there are quite a few things that with hindsight could have been different. I think for any future banners, we need to make sure of where it's going and design it accordingly. An option is to make new banners for the spots they've let us use, and design it specifically for that, and use the others to pass around.
Sarcastic, patronising, just terms that you enjoy; but nothing to do with the discussion. Yes, I've questioned you; are you beyond that? You have answered nothing, just made boring counter-accusations. You are involved in this to the point where you might feel responsible. Good work and no niggle from me. But you seem to have a new found belief in the club and it's management. Is this project led;what is it makes you tell us all they are behind you? In most businesses this would have been a Monday - Friday get it sorted issue. A business that wants to move forward would not leave you clutching at straws after all of these weeks/months; it's not that I want to fall out with you, I simply do not believe their lies. Distance has it's advantages. Leave it there, it's distructive and serves no purpose.
I'll have a word with the chair of the SAG, I should not be the wit of man to sort somewhere they can be clearly seen.
DMD and Mauled have a a good relationship with the SMC and JM. The Cobb Morley banner was hung lower than expected, but it will be sorted. Placement is going to be an issue for large banners but there are plenty of options.
Nothing wrong with people asking me anything. I try to answer honestly and fully, as I have with you. What lies are you claiming have been made and by who? Also, I don't think they're behind me, I think they're behind all the people that supported and contributed in some way to the banner. That doesn't mean I hold the same view of them on everything, it's simply what I've found when dealing with them on this specific issue. Why on earth would I say it and give them credit if I didn't feel it was due? They certainly haven't left me clutching at straws. They've left me optimistic that we can work with them on other ideas if, as seems the case, there's a desire for more. This will sound petulant, but it isn't, it's meant as a genuine offer. This is about a demonstration of support for the team with no agendas or egos. If you or anyone else wants to be involved or take it forward, they're more than welcome to step in, and I'l give them whatever support and advice I can and be as involved as much or as little they want. No individual (except mauled) is important, it's a banner that has united most posters in a common goal. I'm sure there are people more capable on here than I am. If you've an idea I'm lying or we're being lied to, come with me to the stadium and hear it from the people at the club themselves and then decide.
I think creating new ones specifically for the spaces they've given us and using the existing ones to pass round is a decent option. The chair of SAG's not going to be able to resolve several of the issues, as they're not safety related. The only real safety issue would be someone looking at the logistics of 'how' they're hung, the 'where' is a separate issue. The 'safety' issues are liable to be resolved in the future, but understandably, they need to fit in with other schemes.
I fully support and endorse what DMD has posted. This movement, for want of a better word is not about personal promotion, it is not agenda driven, it is a simple show of support for the team. It is seen by the club as important and the SMC is fully committed to making it work. The fact is that apart from Mauled no individual or group can gain from all of this. Mauled as an artist deserves recognition. I applaud his work and contribution.
I think that now the club understand what fans want, future dealings, be it rejigging the existing ones or putting new ideas to them, will be smoother and better handled. I agree totally about the visibility, but to be fair, us and the club were reacting to events as they unfolded. We've all learned from the experience.
