No one here is saying Gerrard isn't a legend or that we should forget all of his years of excellent service on the basis of this game. Anyone suggesting that others are are just desperately clinging to stay on top the high horse of a perfect fan and what they should be saying. Regardless of if it were Gerrard or some kid like Rossiter, it was a completely moronic thing to do. Legendary status doesn't exempt you from criticism when you do something as daft as that. If Mario had done it (and he almost did), the anger on here would be immense.

If we fail to get fourth and the Mancs do, the media will be full of reports on how Gerrard blew it - whether we would have come back in the game or not, we'll never know because of it. For Gerrard's sake, I hope we get fourth regardless because it's been a terrible year for him and he looks unlikely to be leaving LFC on the high as he deserves to do.

Yeah, the manc loving media never dwell on Beckham's petulance that cost his country or Scholes being a dirty player when making tackles(apparently he never learnt how to tackle properly), but Gerrard will for a while be remembered for his errors and Sundays red card.

Wether you would have got something out of the game or not remains to be seen, one things for sure though there definitely would have been a reaction from you, after being totally outplayed in the first half. Even with 10 men you made a go of things and gave us an uncomfortable finale to the game. We where able to play keep ball at crucial stages though, to drain the energy and momentum away from your 10 men. So with 11 men you would have been able to get hold of possession a lot easier.

Let's be realistic here, with 10 men and a goal down your chances of getting anything where very slim, if anything you did pretty well to lose by only a goal, having played the whole 2nd half with 10.

So Gerrard has cost you any realistic chance of a fight back, with his actions. You'd expect that sort of behaviour from a young 18 year old rookie, losing his cool in the heat of the moment, but you wouldn't expect it from a seasoned veteran like Gerrard.

His slip last year whilst amusing to rival supporters, you can accept as it wasn't an act of stupidity, it was just an unfortunate mistake in a crucial area of the field. But this was a clear act of stupidity that will likely cost you millions in top 4 revenue, and could damage the future of your club. You won't be able to attract the same class of player in the summer, and you won't have as much money to spend. You'll also struggle to hang onto some of your better players.

It has also handed a massive life line to your biggest rivals, in there pursuit to get back to being one of the top sides in Europe. I was beginning to worry about us getting into the top 4, but after our win on Sunday I feel far more confident we will make it.

Gerrards stamp hasn't just cost you 3 points, it's also guarenteed us 3 points, your biggest rivals for top 4, so the act of stupidity on his part has pretty much cost you 6 points

Let's not loose sight of the fact that three months ago most fans and pundits would have pissed their pants laughing at the idea we'd ever be near fighting for a place in the top four, and Gerrard has played his part in pulling us up from the bottom half of the table to be where we are. We won't get top four now, and United will - but that is more down to our appalling form for the first 15/16 games of the season rather than any one match that came after.

Not to excuse Gerrard at all for acting like he did, but one game, however vital, doesn't make a season.

They've played part time football for most of the season like we did last year, to chase a CL place is one thing and coping with it along with domestic games is another, gone are the days when utd could field almost different teams in certain comps, their squad couldn't have coped with Europe and finish top 4 this season.

We are at our most vulnerable this season though PMK, as after missing out on CL last season it is vital we don't miss out for a second season, as it begins to take its toll on the clubs revenue. So for our rivals, it is all about trying to keep us down whilst we're down.

We spent big last summer, even when we weren't in the CL, which should give you a fair idea of the financial clout we can call upon. So if we're back in the big time again, we'll spend even more money to ensure we stay there. So I wouldn't worry about our squad not coping next season if we make it, as we have the money to improve the squad.

With the way results are going it is not just a straight fight between ourselves and your lot for 1 final spot. Arsenal and City's spots are far from secure. The Arsenal game you have coming up now becomes a key game. Win it and you'll be at most 3 points behind 4th place, lose it and you'll likely have an 8 point gap to overhaul, an impossible task. But 3 points and it's all still to play for.

The Arsenal game is a win win situation for us, if Arsenal win we have the chance to get 8 ahead of you, if you guys win we have the chance to go 3rd. A draw wouldn't be bad either

If it was just about "financial clout" Utd would have bought this and every other seasons prem title, as proved this season at OT its the manager as well as the money that brings success, your manager spoke last week about the players choosing formations and team tactics, what a tosser, he played the wrong tactics etc for 6 months of the season until he finally admitting he got it wrong.
If he wasn't a stubborn old **** Utd might have been going neck and neck with Chelsea for the title.

We had not been the top spenders in the PL for over a decade before last summer, so I'm not sure where your getting that rubbish from.

On the other point we rarely agree on something. I myself have been very critical of LVGs tactics and in particular his 343 system. Thankfully he has stopped using it now

    <laugh>

I never said utd were "the top spenders", arguably the richest club in the world could easily have outspent City and Chelsea and now probably will in the future.
You were the one that mentioned utd's financial clout.

LVG is no Ferguson and will spend the Glazers money like a crazed gambler, Fergie had many years at OT and had time to bring youth through, LVG won't be there once his contract expires, he said he'll be drinking fine wine and eating good food in his Portuguese paradise.

You and many others have been critical of him, but the arse kissing by the media since Sunday will get him back in the good books with the brainwashed utd fans no doubt.

it will be interesting to note what will occur.

my feeling is utd players have shwon they are of top 4 quality and they have been

    a) able to score goals
    b) able to orgnaise a defence

The real question for utd is not are we getting 4th this year but really how to we get to the top of the league.

De Gea... rooney... dimaria... mata.... are very much top players, blind, herrera and carrick are very good players IMO. Jones, smalling and evans are average players. Are they getting utd to the top? no... so utd need to spend money....

it will be interesting to see what is done.

I like many of us have dreaded the time when Van Gaal gets it right. In a way I am surprised it had taken so long for him to get a good team - Week 30!! With the players they have, getting them to play as a team would probably put most top teams on their toes. Up till now, their team has not been greater than the sum of its parts.

It also helps that this is one of the weakest PL seasons in history.

He's been a right prat about it tbh. But having said that, he still got the results. But fck that. If all I wanted was results, I'd just tune in to final scores instead of watching the game.

Bottom line is next season he better not serve up the same turgid muck he has for at least half the season. It's not just league improvement he'll be judged on BUT ALSO the manner in which we do it.
