That is a very insightfull and thought prevoking point, i'll kick your face in laterCongerton needs to find a coach he can work with, simple as that.
I think a big problem over he is that the DoF is supposed to be the managers boss. Manager's don't like that. The GM/head coach system works in America, no reason it shouldn't over here.

Has there been a successful DoF in the EPL? I suppose the yardstick everyone goes by....Sir Alex Fergie....didn't have one. So is that the answer...find a good manager and back him......

I just wish we were ahead of Chelsea on points.I think its going on as a working progress throughout the premier league, i also think we are ahead of the game
Chelsea and City aren't doing too badly in terms of signings.
Replace Chelsea with any club above us!!I just wish we were ahead of Chelsea on points.
But isn't his role as DOF to have the final say on transfers? His role ATM has confused me mate.Replace Chelsea with any club above us!!
Congerton had deals (apparently) in place for Toby Alderwireld (we got Buckley) and Micah Richards on loan (we got Coates) - these two deals, (I have it on good authority) were done and dusted but Poyet stopped them happening - not sure why our DoF bringing in 2 players to improve the squad would put him under pressure!
Me too - a "head coach" as we were led to believe when Congerton was appointed, is the one who puts the deals in place and does the negotiating - Poyet said he will have the final say - he scuppered the Richards deal by telling Micah's agent that he wouldn't get many starts - that, in itself, should've got him fired! Micah Richards is a better defender than we have at the club - capable in Central or Full Back positions - and Poyet wanted Coates? Been better off signing my wheelie bin FFS!But isn't his role as DOF to have the final say on transfers? His role ATM has confused me mate.
Fair crack of the whip ey mate, thats frustrating to hear.. The best run clubs in the league know their roles, ATM it seems we're still learning the ropes..Me too - a "head coach" as we were led to believe when Congerton was appointed, is the one who puts the deals in place and does the negotiating - Poyet said he will have the final say - he scuppered the Richards deal by telling Micah's agent that he wouldn't get many starts - that, in itself, should've got him fired! Possibly but if I was DoF and looking at players and I gave the gaffer Micah Richards and Toby Alderwireld as options that would blatantly improve the team - not the squad but the team - and he scuppered the deal then alarm bells would be ringing - I don;t exactly know the ins and outs but I know for certain that, to use Micah Richards' bulk as the reason for not signing him saying he wouldn't be capable of playing the right type of football and bringing in Coates and having Brown and O'Shea on the books there isn;t much question to me - as a DoF I'd be thinking - "Gaffer's going to be delighted I've lined these up" but I guess Poyet thought differently! I don;t bloody knowThat, I`m wondering might have been the problem. He surely can`t just bring players in without Poyets agreement first, no matter who they are. Seems to me Poyet may have been exercising his authority feeling he was being undermined.
Surely the coach says "I want players for these 3 positions". The dof goes away and comes back with a list of say, 9. Coach says "I want him, him and him." dof goes and gets them. Is that the way it`s supposed to work rather than the dof saying to the coach "I got you these 3 players"?
It won`t work unless they work together. Certainly doesn`t seem like that was the case.

If the DoF can get us a player like Micah Richards he shouldn't need the managers approval.
I think this is the problem. In England we see a DoF as a bloke who goes out and does the managers bidding. In reality that isn't how it works abroad and that's not how it should work over here.
In America and on the continent this role is higher up in the food chain than the head coach. The DoF/GM scouts the market and puts together a team he believes are capable of doing well.
The coach then comes in and does just that, coaches.
