Hope the treatment goes well for a true gent and a great sportsman. Best wishes to all the Mauger family Love the fact that he won his last World Title with Hull Vikings MAUGER FAMILY STATEMENT FORMER world speedway and long track champion Ivan Mauger OBE MBE is being treated for cognitive aphasia, a communication disorder. The Mauger family are issuing this statement detailing the situation and will be making no further comment. Ivan, who won six speedway titles between 1968 and 1979, and long track crowns in 1971, 1972 and 1976, announced his retirement from public life two years ago. He is receiving daily treatment at a Gold Coast nursing home, but still manages to enjoy time with wife Raye, their three children, Julie, Kym and Debbie, and longstanding friends and associates from within motorcycling and the wider community. Meanwhile, collectors are warned to be wary of items of Ivan's equipment and memorabilia being offered for sale. “It has come to our notice that some unauthorised and unscrupulous people have been making false representations so please take every care to ensure any such offers are genuine and being made by authentic sellers,” said Raye. https://www.facebook.com/ivan.mauger.3?fref=nf
Get well soon Ivan, a great sportsman and true gentleman.Used to love going to speedway, for me it was Odsal and then Halifax Dukes, was living in Keighley at that time.
Very sad news. Caused uproar at a pub quiz years ago. Who is the fastest man round the Boulevard? People putting Leulai, Kemble, Au Koi (sp). The answer was Ivan. Bedlam
I think Kelly Moran finished 4th in the World the same year as Ivan won his 6th title. Had a few nights out with Kelly Moran and Dennis Sigalos at the Empress club ... Very sad when Kelly died some of the coverage of him when he was ill was really hard to watch.
I'll never forget the packed Boulevard to welcome him after his 6th World Title. Fans of all his previous clubs (as far away as Exeter) travelled up that night to cheer him on. That shows how well respected he was. Great night.
Quite a coup at the time to get Ivan at the Boulevard, Hull Vikings were a class act for quite a while in the speedway world. Hope things turn out ok for the guy.
This should bring back a few memories... please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image
Nice one. Brings back great memories. Boulevard track was really too narrow for speedway when you think about. And why didn't someone think of shale deflectors earlier !!
Get well Ivan. I remember him. Anyone remember Hulls Angels? Used to go with Mom and Dad to the speedway track along Hedon Road on the old aerodrome with Members of the Hull Auto Cycle and Light Car club.
Hull City AFC failed to support Hulls Angels, **** me, its not the first time Hull city directors have pissed off "Hulls Angels" http://www.defunctspeedway.co.uk/Hull (Hedon).htm
Yep I used to go too, Could it be that Hull Vikings are the Hull team that had the most world star names in their team.
Sad news. Ivan Mauger is a true sporting legend. By coincidence there's currently a very active Facebook thread in 'Hull: The good old days" about speedway at the Boulevard. We had Kelly Moran and Dennis Sigalos staying in our village during the 1979 season when Vikings were pipped for the title by Coventry, I believe there were 20,000 at Coventry for the decider. Not sure what gates The Boulevard used to pull in but it always seemed a good crowd. And you never forget the first taste of "Grit burger"!
Wednesdays where great nights indeed. Was that Easington or somewhere like that? They all had Lada cars .... I went to that meeting at Coventry was it Brandon a banked track. Good times for sure.
It certainly was Easington. I think they wanted to get Kelly Moran somewhere quieter after his, er, lively times in Beverley!
