The only way Townsend is going to get any better is if they raise the crossbar by 15 foot. At least we knew what we're getting with Lennon.
Against United, certainly we could have done with Lennon in hindsight and maybe it would've been good to bring him on in a few games when we're seeing out the win but Townsend started the year well, in my opinion, and was worthy of his starting place. Lennon moving was best for both parties, I think, it's been so long since he showed more than a glimmer of hope that he'd return to his previous form going forward that it's just not worth us waiting and hoping anymore.
Fully agree about Townsend starting 2015 well, I mentioned in a previous post that in recent weeks he's probably been the best of the attacking trio , not that any have been too great but I just feel Lennon offers more work rate than any of our other wingers, especially defensively and in Poch's philosophy where fitness and hard work seems key, I thought Lennon would've suited it well and could've been ideal to have brought on at particular times during the season.
I shouldn't worry too much lads it's very unlikely we'll cause you too much trouble, will rally after you score but as we couldn't hit a cow's proverbial with a banjo right now, nothing will come of it. Unless you'd like to lend us Kane again.....
After what you did with him last time? Pass. How do you feel about Pearson's recent spats with the press, by the way? Is he normally like that or is he showing signs of the pressure he's feeling? They're an annoying bunch, but pissing them off seems pretty counter-productive.
A bit of both, he's often not particularly media friendly, even last year when we were winning nearly every game, he wasn't receptive to journalists who asked dumb questions. Undoubtedly our predicament puts him under pressure and he's more 'tetchy' than ever. It's massively counter productive as the press know if they push, he'll react & they'll have a story.
We've heard that before and everytime the opposition give us a game. We're not very good at killing off teams and our defence is sloppy enough to give even the worst sides a chance. Forest and Sheffield United both gave us a scare in the cups, Burnley did twice and you guys knocked us out. We also gave Newcastle their second win of the season(after you guys, to be fair) and we needed a red card to beat both Hull and Villa. We might be a good side but we don't exactly do things the easy way. I really hope you're right though, we could do with a good win to get the taste of the United defeat out of our mouths.
We solve everybody’s scoring problems. We badly need a win of any kind, though the loss to Man U removes any hope I’d had (which had been slight) of a top four spot. The question at this point is whether Pochettino can continue the two steps forward and one stop back progress he’s made with the team for most of this year. Right now it looks more like our highwater mark was the Chelsea and Arsenal wins.
We've given a few teams a good game, so that's possible but win, no. At least you beat a 10 man Hull team, we didn't. We've re-invigorated everyone's season except our own. We've had penalties given against for the ball striking our defenders face but not given when they were stonewall. And scored the most improbable own goals...no day is ever our day! We need a win more than anyone else in the division and I'd be delighted if you could solve our scoring & winning problems but it is very unlikely We are down, we've resigned ourselves, the only thing that could make this less painful is not finishing below DQPR.
Wow Foxy, while I respect your pessimism, we Tottenham fans know what we are talking about when we say 'we solve other teams scoring problems'. We also solve the problem of a team not having won away for x number of games, a striker not scoring for x number of games(even Balotelli scored against us).teams not winning a penalty........... In fact you name it and we are the generous boys.
Foxy in Foyle, not sure how old you are but I remember the days of when you had Martin O'Neil as manager. You battering us in league games (physically), especially at your place with your centre backs (Steve Walsh was one) who would soar towards the goal and score with ease! That was a tidy team back then, full of strength and power with Lennon and Heskey. That was one of the reasons we weren't confident re the Worthington cup final as before that in the league you had the upper hand (home and away). Anyway, shame your relegated but Nigel Pearson is a championship standard manager and I wonder if he can have the same impact in the championship now the players are aware he isn't cut out to manage at premier league level? Still, you have had some fine moments this year with the battering of Man Utd and that superb Nugent goal away to Liverpool (a game you should have won). Plus you haven't lost by a margin greater then 2 goals all season so your hardly embarrassing yourselves. You're just short of the quality needed to survive in this league.
It's amazing how Leicester run away with the Championship and can't cut it in the premier, like many others. I guess money talks! I wonder who will survive among this season's Championship contenders? ....and Sheffield United seem to have shot their bolt after their tremendous cup runs......
Seems the only one's to have done well with little money are Palace, they seem to find a bit of form just at the right time, and the longer they stay the better their financail situation will be
If you can be generous tomorrow Blue & White we'd really appreciate it. My pessimism only really kicked in after the Hull game tbh. My previously half full glass now has a hole in the bottom. I'm still secretly hoping the prove my wrong! Thanks Boss, I am indeed old enough to remember those happy days. I don't think we feel we have been terrible, which makes it all the more frustrating being in the position we are. If, and it's a big if, and yes it's small margins in the PL but not conceding a couple of ridiculous own goals or the 'not' penalty at Liverpool and we'd be 9/12 points better off. Equally frustrating, we bought 2 strikers but Pearson keeps one on the bench, no idea why! Our Championship squad cost very little & we've spent relatively little in PL terms, again frustrating we thought we needed to add to the squad more than we have, we've got money but haven't really spent any. Although our owners did learn from the Sven debacle spending doesn't equal success.
Leicester are combative with three experienced centre halves, but can't seem to score. Scoring goals is vital to staying up. It looks grim for them. Did they really come from 1-3 down to beat Utd 5-3 or has some joker just cut and pasted some clips together on YouTube?
I and other Spurs fans feel for you, Foxy. There is nothing quite like knowing and accepting it ain’t gonna happen this year. It’s frustrating because both our teams were good enough to reach their objectives. But margins are fine, and teams have to have it in them to get it done. In your case, (not having followed you closely) I gather it’s a simple matter of not enough goals. But it doesn’t make any sense to me, because when I’ve watched Leicester, they’ve looked dangerous. In fact, I can’t recall a disconnect between my impression of a team and the number of points they have like this year’s Leicester offhand. It’s easy to say our problem is that we can’t defend, but it may be truer to say we can’t stand prosperity. Our bad performances always carry into the next few games, and our good ones may or may not. In any case, it does look like the collision of an insignificant force with a flimsy object.
