Former Tottenham player Jonathan Woodgate has been handed the chance of an immediate return to Premier League action with Stoke City.

The ex-England defender quit White Hart Lane last month after turning down a pay-as-you-play deal with Harry Redknapp's side.

The injury prone centre-back is a free agent following his release and Potters boss Tony Pulis has opened talks with him as he tries to add some top level experience to his squad.

The 31-year-old is also wanted by his first club Leeds United, but his preference is likely to be to stay in the Premier League.

Pulis is ready to gamble on the ex-Real Madrid man, despite him only being fit enough to play four games in two years.

He was signed by Newcastle for £9 million after clocking up 100 games for Leeds.

When he's fit, he's one of the best CB's in the world. It's the "when he's fit" bit that's the problem.

He is good.....on youtube....on clips shown about 5 years ago.

I very much doubt we're actually interested in him, just paper talk IMO.

On a pay as you play it might be worth a punt. But don't offer him a lot!

I would pay him £5:00 out of my own pocket, and throw in a couple of bags of pork scratchings just too keep in out of the team. <ok>

    Hi Conroy,
    I hope this helps mate...
Found it amongst the 100 odd player's relased by various clubs this season.

"In Woodgate's case it brings to an end a largely peripheral role at Spurs in which his recurring injuries restricted him to only one appearance last season and, in total, a mere 65 spread over the three and a half years since he signed from Middlesbrough for £8m. Woodgate's CV also includes spells at Leeds United, Real Madrid and Newcastle United but there must now be questions about where the 31-year-old goes from here"

For me it's a massive risk Conroy? I would even think about it but I'm not Tony Pulis <doh>

So Pulis would take a chance on a crock like Woodgate but pass up on a hot shot like Demba Ba???

    Defies logic that!

I'm not sure Ba was Pulis' fault. . . We were ready to pay decent money for him, the deal was all set, and he was ready to sign for us. . . Maybe a **** up by the medical staff? He's knees don't seem to be a problem from what I've seen. . .

Against AC Milan, our nil-nil draw at White Hart Lane. He came on in the 59th minute, and finished the game. Put on a top class show too (was playing at unfamiliar right back)
