Here are Betfair's odds on the next boss.

    1. Dick Advocaat - 8/11
Former Rangers boss Advocaat is the most mentioned name so far and is currently unemployed after leaving the Serbian national team after a disappointing start to European Championship qualifying.

He has many managerial honours from his decorated career including winning the Scottish, Dutch and Russian leagues as well as winning the UEFA Cup with Zenit Saint Petersburg.

    2. Michael Laudrup - 7/1
Laudrup had a very successful stint at Swansea while in English football, playing the style of football that Sunderland fans would love to see at the Stadium of Light.

He is currently in Qatar managing Lekhwiya who sit top of the league, seven points clear with four games to go.

It is believed he turned down the QPR job because he wanted to see out the season in Qatar and it is likely that remains the situation.

    3. Sam Allardyce - 9/1
Former Sunderland player Allardyce is also a name that has been linked to a return to Wearside, this time as boss.

He has had a brilliant season at West Ham but has still not won over the board and, with his contract up at the end of season, looks likely to leave Upton Park.

Like Laudrup though, he’s unlikely to leave until after the season’s over.

    4. Harry Redknapp - 14/1
He left relegation rivals QPR recently saying he needed surgery on his knees.

As Bowers noted above though, he is still a candidate for the Black Cats post.

Wether or not he would see Sunderland as an ideal opportunity to get back in to the game remains to be seen.

    5. Mick McCarthy - 14/1
Former Sunderland boss McCarthy has emerged as a surprise target after a good season at Ipswich in the Championship this season.

He spent two and a half seasons at Sunderland, guiding the club back to the Premier League as champions but failed to strengthen in the summer as Sunderland were relegated with the lowest ever Premier League points tally (later beaten by Derby).

    6. Ally McCoist - 20/1
Another former Black Cats player, McCoist was largely unsuccessful on Wearside after becoming what was then their most expensive ever signing in 1981 (£400,000).

Now in management McCoist is technically still employed by Rangers and is on gardening leave after departing in December.

    7. Alan Curbishley - 25/1
Curbishley is another contender who may be interested in taking a short-term role to pave his way back in to football.

Curbishley was in charge at Charlton for many years before in 2006.

After a short break he joined West Ham in December 2006 and guided the club to safety despite looking nailed on for relegation.

In the next season he won two out of the first three games before resigning over transfer policy after Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney were sold to Sunderland.

He recently joined Fulham working as a coach under Kit Symons.

    8. Niall Quinn - 33/1
Another former player and boss, Quinn is a surprise contender on the list.

He managed the first six games of Sunderland’s 2006-07 campaign after heading a takeover of the club and also becoming Chairman.

    He managed just one win.

Most fans would likely love to see Quinn return to the club, but maybe not as a manager.

Other notable mentions with other bookies
Ben Olsen - 16/1 Paddy Power
Olsen is the current manager of DC United and was voted 2014 coach of the year in USA.

It is worth noting Sunderland’s recent connection in the country.

Bob Bradley - 33/1 Paddy Power
Another tie to the USA, former national team manager Bradley became the first American to manage in a top flight in Europe when he took the Stabæk job in Norway.

There new season doesn’t start until next month so it may be possible to tempt him away.

Claudio Ranieri - 33/1 Bet Victor
Former Chelsea boss is currently unemployed after an unsuccessful stint with Greece’s national side.

TBH I'm not getting excited by any of them mate. I know there's not a lot of quality managers out there looking for work right now, but we need a strong character in charge who can rally the troops and get results. None of them names suggest the bookies have done their homework, rather just plucked a few names out for a laugh.

Niall Quinn???? FFS Nooooooo!!!!! great bloke but never a manager.

Please don;t even think of mentioning those words!! I'd be gutted!

What will be worse is if they come in for the game on Saturday, engineer a win (by whatever means) then people will say "yeah give them the job" - not many on here but the press always want a caretaker to get the permanent job after one win!!

Then again - if we win on Saturday then I'll be ecstatic!!

If Short wants Allardyce he should go get him now. No more ****ing about.

Allardyce might not want the job and I wouldn`t blame him.

I am hoping its big Sam myself, like I said on a previous post he has been there and done it all before.
Felt he was harshly sacked at Newcastle and I think he would do a better job at Sunderland.
Mr Short needs to get the right man in this time and back him financially.
