Can anyone confirm if Cabaye is going to have the number 52 shirt? Makes sense, considering he's always had the no.7, shirt. And obviously, its not vacant. If so, Im deffo going for it haha, just seems a random number for a first teamer.

SSN showed the squad training yesterday and Joey not only had a new haircut but was wearing #7 kit, read into that what you will. Don't think squad numbers have been done yet though.

It just seemed to fit, everyone else had their numbers.....Ba had the no.19. which was the number on his shirt when he was paraded in front of the cameras.

I wouldnt read anything in to the new ones with numbers of 50+

Last years first team are most likely gonna be the exact same apart from maybe the keeper.

The only ones that have already switched are Ba and Xisco as well as Ben Arfa and Routledge (B.A. now has the #10 training sweatshirt. Firts pick of the #37 was just last years top).

I dont get the whole thing with having numbers that add together to make the one you want, like Ben Arfa and 37 or this supposed one. Surely 17 would do just as well if you had some sort of fetish for the number 7...

I'd go proper maths-ie and get 3 squared or root 81 instead of 9. Presumably half the team wouldn't have a ****ing clue.

Last year's team has, except for BA,the same numbers they had last year. The new lads all have numbers beginning with 50. I think the idea was to show that they were clearly just randown numbers for pre-season, to prevent anyone trying to read to much into why one person was given one number and someone else another

What number was HBA wearing? He should be given 10, but Rout has got it and hasn't left (just) yet.

According to wiki the yes he is, i should imagine he chose it, frenchmen like random numbers, like menez and roma who is 94, then again they only use 1 4 7 9 10 11, the rest are probably retired.

out of interest, are there any of our numbers that are retired, like 12 at plymouth

9 should be retired until we find a true Geordie legend who is able to wear it. Like the last one we found, but not a money-loving ****.

We dont have any retired, a lot of clubs retire 12 for the fans, indicating they are the 12th man though.

Also I wouldnt read anything into what shirts they wear in training, they just pick one, except a lot of them go for the number they wore last season. New signings will pick up their favourite number that is lying around. Seen Cabaye in 52 and Marveaux in 22.

Not for us. Retiring numbers is daft in a sport that's been going for 100+ years, everyone at a successful club would have silly numbers like 87 because all the low ones are gone. Understand as a mark if respect to someone like Marc-vivien Foe, but for good players? Nah. If we retired the 9 after Milburn Supermac would've been 19 and Shearer 99...

I think many clubs have no Number 13 as people believe it is unlucky.

Odd then that it is the most common lucky number in Britain...(Sorry, I'm reading a pub-quiz book atm)

I hear 23 will be retired once the current wearer finishes his career

Rather like at AC Milan, where the number 3 can only be worn by a member of the Maldini family, the number 23 is retired with the exception of the Ameobis.
