Duncan Watmore is hoping to break into the first team during the closing stages of the 2014-15 season. A regular fixture in the club’s U21s, Watmore was selected on the bench for Sunderland’s recent trip to Old Trafford, and although he didn’t feature the winger admitted the experience provided a timely boost following a return from injury. The 21-year-old’s only previous first-team appearance came in last season’s FA Cup win over Carlisle United, but he is hoping to add to that tally during the final games of the Barclays Premier League season. “It was great to get the call from the gaffer for the game at Old Trafford and it really gives you that belief. “It drives you forward and makes you strive to get back there, so it is up to me to keep training and playing well because I know if called upon I will be ready to take my chance.” He continued: “I have a lot of self-belief but obviously on your day you can be great and on another day you can be bad, but I think you have got to have that confidence in yourself to believe that when you get a chance you’ll take it. “Everybody wants to get into the first team and it is of course my main ambition, so hopefully by the end of the season I can break into it and prove that I’m good enough to stay there." Watmore has been one of the U21s’ most-influential players during the current campaign, but injury threatened to derail his impact as a broken leg ruled him out for two months. However, the forward has returned to full-fitness in recent weeks and he was unable to hide his delight after getting back amongst the goals in Monday’s 3-0 win over West Ham United. “I felt like I was on good form before I got injured and I think I had scored four in four, and after picking up minutes here and there in recent weeks I feel match fit once more. “I’m raring to go and I’m really enjoying it,” continued Watmore. “We were desperate for the win on Monday night so we were delighted to get it and it was a great performance all-round.”
