Police have submitted applications for the Coach and Horses and Chaplains in Consett, County Durham, to both be stripped of their alcohol licences after raids on November 8 later revealed the bars to be selling vodka of ‘industrial’ origin. Trading standards officers found numerous bottles of Kommissar vodka in both bars and after being examined with a UV lamp they discovered the authenticity stamps did not show. Tests on the vodka revealed it was not ‘genuine’. A statement from Sergeant Timothy Robson, of Durham police, said: “The alcohol content of the samples were too low for the material to be categorised as a spirit drink. “Further, the presence of isopropanol and t-butanol is consistent with the alcohol being of industrial rather than agricultural origin. “The public analyst is therefore of the opinion the sample was unfit for human consumption.” A meeting of Durham County Council’s licensing committee on Tuesday will decide whether the bars, owned by Sukhdev Singh Gill, will be allowed to continue serving booze. At around 8.50pm officers searched the Coach and Horses before visiting Chaplains where a number of flies were found floating in vodka bottles. Mr Gill told Sgt Robson and the trading standards inspectors the vodka had been ordered from Nisa. However, Nisa had no record of purchases or deliveries for the vodka to either premises. please log in to view this image Counterfeit vodka seized from the Coach and Horses and Chaplains in Consett Sgt Robson’s statement added: “This vodka is not fit for human consumption, indeed it is very harmful to an individual who consumes it. “Customers have reported that this vodka tastes funny. “It is clear that young persons under 18 frequent the Coach and Horses, I am of the belief that the management of these premises have intentionally purchased this illicit alcohol and not only displayed it within the premises but have continuously sold it to customers purporting it to be a safe, genuine product - this is not the case.” The meeting takes place in County Hall, Durham.

I was in the Coach and Horses about 3 years back and ordered 4 pints - each of us took one sip and took them back to the bar - it was f***ing disgusting but they would not give us our money back. The bouncers were standing behind us so we left without causing a rumpus. I had often thought about revisiting and getting a sample to have an analysis done on it - wish I had now
