Steven Gerrard wants to be Liverpool manager Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted it is his “dream’ to return to his beloved club as their manager one day. Gerrard has been at the Merseyside club his entire career but has called time on his Liverpool playing days as he will be heading across the pond to play for MLS side LA Galaxy next season. Gerrard missed his side's Europa League clash Besiktas through injury and instead served as a pundit for ITV at Anfield. When asked before the game about his future ambitions, Gerrard gave the answer all Liverpool fans wanted to hear. "Who knows? It is obviously a big dream of mine, but you have to be good enough first and foremost. MANAGERIAL AMBITIONS "It's not just about saying you want to be a manager or you are going to be a manager.” Gerrard realises that he can’t just expect to walk into the dugout at Anfield when he retires and take over, but it doesn’t stop him planning for life after his playing come to an end. Although he has more than proven himself as a player at Anfield, he can’t just be the manager because he is Steven Gerrard. The Reds skipper added: “If you want to be a manager, you have to go out and prove yourself. "It's a long way away, I've still got a few years left to play and that is my main focus at the moment.” In the encounter with Besiktas Gerrard saw his vice-captain have to deal with a difficult situation late on in the close game when the Reds were awarded a penalty after Jordon Ibe was bundled to the floor. Stand-in skipper Jordan Henderson picked up the ball to take the penalty but late substitute Mario Balotelli took it off him. Daniel Sturridge got involved trying to get Henderson to take control but Balotelli was having none of it - he was taking the penalty and that was that. BALOTELLI MISCHIEF The Italian stepped up; staggered his run and calmly finished the spot-kick to win it for Liverpool. However, Gerrard wasn't too impressed with what he saw from up above in the studio. He said: “Mario’s been a bit mischievous and gone against team codes. If he missed it could’ve been like Everton. Rules are rules and they should’ve been adhered to, “Jordan is the captain and Mario showed Jordan a bit of disrespect there, but he’s scored a very important goal.” All’s well that ends well though as Liverpool go to the Ataturk Stadium next week, the site of their historic Champions League final comeback in 2005 against AC Milan, for the second leg with a one-goal cushion. Should Steven Gerrard become the manager of Liverpool one day? http://www.givemesport.com/547870-s...ok&utm_medium=Paid-Social&utm_campaign=547870
If he wants to become manager then he's taken the first step, I would love it to become reality but that's along way off.
I'd have preferred Carragher has I always felt he had the better football brain and was the true team captain. However, I'd gladly accept Gerrard as manager so long as he proves his worth first. As I keep saying (#anothergerrezrepeat), the is no room for sentiment in football.
I'll be controversial here and say I don't think he has what it takes I've seen his head drop too many times and feel that had he not been the local lad with the ability he had (as in move him to a different club) he'd not been a captain at all I can see him looking at the money that rodgers is on and the money Thierry Henry is on (the ****ing same) and thinking.... Hmmmm carragher had it right and I'm sure when garry Neville is off managing england (what a ****ing joke) sky will repeat the bbcs mistake and pay gerrard and carragher to be on sky
And why? After x y z and p and q retired or got fired out. Hell I don't even know if captaining anyone qualifies anyone for management frankly
Gerrard was captain long before any of those got named, he just took his time getting the arm band permanently. I do agree he's not the greatest captain but that's more because I like the captain to be a vocal intelligent organiser like Carragher was. I suppose that's more in context with your original point since we're talking about Gerrard's managerial potential.
??? So you are saying the armband that went from beckham to terry to Ferdinand was only ever being kept warm and in fact gerrard led the team? I don't remember it like that especially when he was out wide left
Terry vs Gerrard was publicly a 50:50 split but Rio vs Gerrard was a land slide for Stevie. Beckham is another one like Gerard BTW, leader by example rather than having the brain for it.
I'll chip in a fiver to buy Stevie FM 2015. I've no idea if Gerrard would make a good captain but it would be great if he could get a coaching job with the club first.
