Maybe, but apprently it would still have been folklore:

"This is a competition that has great history for Liverpool. It's an opportunity for these players to write themselves into folklore by winning the game and making sure we get into the next round."

For me Pellegrini will definitely be on his way out of City in the summer. I think this is the only reason this rumour has surfaced. Nothing surprises me in football anymore. But I would say that Rodgers seems to have invested a fair amount of personal in some of these players, Coutinho, Hendo, it comes through in the way he talks, but this is all image management too and of course evrything's going well now. I think there's a strong enough relationship between him and the squad to make him want to get the best out of them and win things at Anfield. But nothing's impossible.

I also think that Citeh have now reached the stage where they want managers who have proven track records, in particular in Europe. They are desperate to achieve something in the CL, they're not going to do that with Rodgers who's European results have been poor at best.
They want a big name manager, they want Pep or Simeone or someone along those lines.

The profile of Citeh doesn't really go with Rodgers, older players and alot of Ego's to clash with Rodgers massive ego, it'd be a trainwreck.

I can see this going for a while as like what has been said here city will inevitably start with the very best and will have to decide what is what.

for me this means i agree that gaurdiola will be option no 1, 2 and 3 for them and they will make that approach if they sack pellegrini.... I think he will prob turn them down as they have not the squad to do what he wants do they? he's got a right cushy number where he is... why on earth leave it? he'll be available next time round in 2 years IMO

I think simeone might be on a list but i have no read as to what city owners want on the pitch. they have not really talked about style anywhere have they? I don't know. Simeone will be quite negative IMO so we will see what they want

I think city will be strongly watching anchelotti at real. If he goes as real are rumbling crazily then he'd be the man.

Rodgers could have enough profile now for city.. i agree that european nouse would be desired though. I do not buy the player stuff though... that is an assumption base don what rodgers has agreed to go do here. At city he might be DELIGHTED to take a vast sum to go win things. It is more about having a technical director running the show that i would question rodgers.

Simeon and Moruinho in one league?! :emoticon-0107-sweat #1-0football

Man City will want a manager who can win Champion Leagues. Don't be surprised if Rafa goes there.

I put the prospect of Rodgers joining City to him and here is what he had to say

"I've signed a deal here, and I want to be here to see that through.

"Then I hope I'll have earned enough time to warrant another deal, to keep growing and building here.

"Where do you go from Liverpool, who are one of the biggest clubs in the world?

"I chose to come to Liverpool because I hoped I could be here for many years."

    On developing us:

"I find I am developing into the very best I can be and we are working into an exciting phase after this season," he said.

"If we get young players tied to contracts, I hope that will allow us to win trophies with this way of working."

He knows he has to win trophies.....

"I really wanted to be here, follow some incredible managers with a support that is unrivalled, and to have success while knowing I was young enough to create and build something,"

"That is why I came here. I know I need to justify that by working well and winning trophies. I hope that is the next step.

"When you come here, that is what you are judged on. It is something (win trophies) I want to do for all the supporters and people here."

Go on Rodgers, lets keep going and working hard

Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool boss has no plans to leave club
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says he has no plans to leave the club.
Rodgers signed a long-term deal with the Anfield club in May 2014 but has been linked with Manchester City.
"Where do you go from Liverpool, one of the biggest clubs in the world?" said the 42-year-old.
"I've signed a deal here and I want to be here to see that through. Then, hopefully, I've earned enough time to warrant another deal, to keep growing and building here."
    Brendan Rodgers factfile
    Born:
26 January, 1973, in Carnlough, Northern Ireland
Previous clubs as manager: Watford, Reading, Swansea
Took charge at Anfield on 1 June 2012, replacing Kenny Dalglish
Crowned LMA Manager of the Year in 2013-14
Liverpool play Blackburn in an FA Cup quarter-final at Anfield on Sunday (16:00 GMT).
The Northern Irishman has yet to win a trophy since taking over at Liverpool in the summer of 2012 but did lead the club to second place in the Premier League last season, which earned qualification to the Champions League.
After a poor start to the current campaign, they are now unbeaten in 12 league games and are just two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.
"If I'm here after this year, it will be the longest period in any role I've been in football. I've always been the same. After three years, I've always moved a role or job," he said.
"I always saw Liverpool as a club that was going to be a destination for me, not somewhere that was part of the journey."
Rodgers, who led Swansea to the Premier League in 2011, added: "I really wanted to be here, follow some incredible managers with a support that is unrivalled, and to have success while knowing I was young enough to create and build something.
"That is why I came here. I know I need to justify that by working well and winning trophies. I hope that is the next step.
"When you come here, that is what you are judged on. It is something I want to do for all the supporters and people her

Every man (or woman) has a price. It is about ambition and fulfilment as well as money.

Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool boss has no plans to leave club

Oh yes? How many times have we heard this from players, managers and politicians? "No plans" does not mean "never".

If Rodgers is being offered double the amount he is currently getting, and double or even treble the transfer kitty and an already more formidable squad, and the potential for regular CL competition, he WILL take it. No manager worth his salt will turn it down.

Even if the red mancs come for him (which is very very unlikely) he will take the job if he gets enough.

There's no point in him saying anything at all because people believe want they want to believe.

I think Brendan would be a food to leave us right now...At City he wouldn't have any excuses + probably would sink rather than swim. And if City toss him away he'll not manage at the top level again for years (if ever).

I can sort of believe Brendan when he says he wants to build a dynasty... I can see him wanting to win a few things here before he goes. He'll want the 'Rodgers' Liverpool' to be remembered. From then on it might be big moves, bigger egos and ever whiter teeth but I think we have him a while longer.

EDIT: Worth noting that where Rodgers is from, 90% of people support Liverpool or United as well as local clubs or Rangers/Celtic. Liverpool is likely a more significant job for him than many English or European managers.

Obviously being biased but City would be like a lot of big money clubs like PSG, Madrid, Chelsea who want a big name manager to come in, manage big name players and win trophies. 1 or 2 trophyless seasons and that's them out but as they're a big name they'll go get another job.

However Rodgers isn't a big name and if he were to go and then get sacked he'd be looking at mid table clubs for his next job unless he moved abroad. Would strike me similar to Moyes, going there, not having time to implement his way and get sacked before heading off to a team worse than the one he original left.

The pressure at Liverpool at the moment is less than it would be at City and although he doesn't have free reign, he'll have a lot more control over players, transfers than I believe he would at City. City want megastars as proven by their current team all being about 29/30 where as here he's started and has a real chance to "do a Wenger" and build a team based around young potential who he can mould to suit his style and constantly challenge for trophies.

We know at the moment we aren't a title winning team so for the next few years, top 4 and a trophy every couple of seasons is a good return and as long as he's delivering that he's in a safe job and he'd be foolish to go anywhere else where different pressures could get the better of him.

In 6-10 years though... if we haven't progressed past that then he might want to test himself at a "bigger" club when he has more experience then fair enough.

The fan in us wants to believe in the bits that favour our theory. If we look at it objectively if City come calling with say £10m/year over 5 years, would he be such a fool to turn it down?

Don't get me wrong, I don't trust many in football further than I could throw them.

I'm saying that it's in Brendan's own interest to stay a bit longer and build his reputation. And he'll follow his own interest as we would naturally expect.
