HELP PLEASE ! I've spent the last few hours trying to sort out the following :

I've an HP laptop about 2 yrs old connected by USB to an HP printer 4250 (which is over 10 years old) never had any issues with it. OS is windows 8.1

This morning after a windows update (which failed - never seen that before) printer no longer works. Driver unavailable. I've the original driver on CD so re-installed it but still no luck.

After various troubleshooting laptop states printer is not compatible with USB 3.0 !!

It's plugged into the usual USB port.

Tearing my hair out - I've been on the HP website and downloaded various things but still no luck.

    Anyone any ideas ???

    Yes.

First step - sledgehammer. Smash both as hard as you can, for as long as you can.

Second step - use a different USB port, USB 3.0 (and other faster ports) are usually colour coded whilst normal ones just look bare. Not always though I don't think, try them all.

Third step - delete windows 8, **** on it, set it on fire, send Microsoft a bundle of hate mail and a bit of anthrax to their headquarters with an explanation of why you sent it. Then never, ever go near it again.

Depends what you use it for really. My idea would be to go down to the shop and buy a new printer normally cheaper than messing about, I find them to be very disposable items these days. Problem solved. Or is your's a specialist printer?

Sorry a new one would be a bit more costly ... I just looked at yours and it is a big bugger.

Yep the 4250 is good printer - had it 10 years + for work which is why I'm loathe to get rid.

I'm trying to find out if it's not now compatible with windows 8 upgrade before I buy a new one but I can't seem to find out !

HP web-site says there IS an updated driver for it but I'm ****ed if I can get it to work...

As Bob said, get rid of Windows 8 and go back to Windows 7, I'm sure someone will be able to load it on to your computer, my lad did mine, that will save you disposing of your current printer and save the cost of a new one, plus it totally gets rid of the despicable Windows 8. Win win!
