Sorry to derail the derail but didn't know where else to post it - as it's of interest to our esteemed friend RHC - just read that Homer Simpson actually discovered the Higgs Boson 14 years before CERN - the proof ....

The formula written on Homer's blackboard above is said to correctly predict the mass of the Higgs Boson !!

    To afcftw:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Guatemala

    Sounds just like Liverpool then.

If you seriously think that "growing some balls" will protect a 20 year old British girl in Latin America then there's really not much I can say to you. By most crime statistics, Guatemala is the 6th most dangerous country in the world. The UK ranks down there at a whopping 190th.

There are plenty of places to go out of your comfort zone, but favelas and low-class barrios are not a smart choice for inexperienced travellers :emoticon-0148-yes:. That's not being a pussy, that's being smart.

Since you've addressed me by name I shall do you the service of responding!

"3) loads of you sound like a bunch of pussies! You need to man up. Yes Central America isn't the safest region In the world and in fact has some very real dangers to consider. But if they are sensible with an element of street smarts they could easily have the time of there lives and learn a massive amount about themselves. Whoever was going on about hearing stories from Argentina about people getting mugged and stabbed, don't you live in Liverpool?"

That's a direct quote from the post you are responding to, to make sure this is nice and clear!

My point was that being afraid shouldn't hold people back.

As you can see above I didn't suggest a teenage girl should grow some balls. I suggested some of the posters on this forum should man up. Again, provided you do your research properly and aren't like a ******ed Brit on holiday, you can have a wonderful time travelling in countries that others deem dangerous.

As I've said, research and a certain level of street smarts will go a long way towards keeping someone safe and allowing them to have a good time.

And finally, I didn't say Guatamala is like Liverpool. I specifically addressed the person who spoke about hearing stories of people being mugged and stabbed in Argentina and suggested that hearing about people being mugged or stabbed should hardly shock someone or stop them going there when they are from a city like Liverpool or London. Can you honestly say you don't hear stories of people being mugged or stabbed in the big cities of the uk? And Argentina of all places in Southern or Central America is the most like our own western way of life!

Like the previous person who responded to my post you've totally missed the point.

Okay, let's play the quote game. My entire point was that yes, a smart traveler could and SHOULD go out of their comfort zone. I'm not from Liverpool. I'm from Serbia and I've grown up traveling around Europe. I know a thing or two about places that most westerners wouldn't consider remotely safe. I've been there. I've been to the Caribbean, outside of the gated resorts. It's not for a 20 year old girl. That was my entire point.

Second, I was the one that talked about Argentina. My girlfriend is from Argentina (lived there a majority of her life) and she has told me first hand the experiences SHE has had (not reports of muggings - she's been mugged herself). My best friend is from the same city as she is. His house has glass and barbed wire on top of the walls. He's been robbed too. We're planning a trip - and with their first hand experience, there are still tons of risks and a very real chance that I'll encounter crime.

So yeah, while I'm still going to take that risk to go to Argentina, a country that you and I agree is closest to the West, I wouldn't recommend a 20 year old girl taking it. Let alone the risk to go to Guatemala which is an entire level of crime higher than that.

As for the Liverpool comment, it was tongue in cheek. Your original comment about Liverpool wasn't meant to be taken as seriously as most on here have. Neither was mine. Stories of people being mugged here and there in Liverpool or even London don't remotely compare to Buenos Aires or Guatemala City. Argentina is dangerous for the locals. They can't even remotely handle their own crime problem. In fact, they are resorting to lynch mobs and vigilante justice now.

Being smart, not being a ******ed Brit/American, etc, will help you in many places around the world and let you have an incredible experience. But in some places, it will only get you so far.

Danilo. That first post you made on here was quite possibly the major influence on her not going - along with my urbane handling of the meeting, of course. Many thanks, mate <ok>

I was going to point out to you yesterday that the person you 'specifically addressed' with the Liverpool comment wasn't from Liverpool but didn't think it was my place to give out his personal information, so your attempt at whatever it was, not only missed the point, it missed the target completely.

My brother is currently travelling around Central and Southern America and is in fact in Argentina with his girlfriend at the moment. I've also got a couple of friends who are currently in Mexico having travelled up from Argentina and then through Central America. So I know that you can travel without trouble, or avoiding the worst of the trouble around these countries. I've travelled with a pretty girl and the vast majority of my friends who travel frequently are couples, all in there early or mid twenties. And you can visit these countries as a woman, again, provided you are cautious about how you travel.

I'm afraid we will have to agree to disagree as we both have separate personal experiences which influence our thinking.

My point was that being from a large city in the UK would mean he has experience with the things he is talking about. Him not being from Liverpool doesn't particularly matter given he's revealed he has lived a life that has brought him in contact with the less desirable side of things. So the point I made still stands. Apologies for making the assumption that the Liverpool fan was from Liverpool. He has however done perfectly well at responding himself, but thanks for your concern my friend :)

This from the Global Peace website:

    Why You Shouldn’t Go:

Guatemala is viewed as one of the worst places to travel for women. Crime rates are staggering, especially those perpetuated against women and those dealing with drugs. Cases of sexual assaults and rapes are on the rise. Street robberies, bus holdups and car jackings happen daily. The worst thing? They’re not even prosecuted by law.
