It hasn't been a great season for English teams in Europe this year, so far. Again. Are our teams just not good enough? Or do we just play too many matches, in too many competitions, handicapped even further by inept fixture planning?

You answered your own question. Just like Newcastle a few seasons back, their squad is too small for domestic and European football, so the latter is causing problems for the former.
Really poor OG puts West Ham 1-0 down at the break and they're lucky it isn't more. Plenty of time for them to turn it around though, as they really didn't look at it in the first half.
