Nah not psychic mate. That was always going to be the outcome. Stick a Chelsea shirt on him and the outcome would be different.
errmmm sorry to have to put it in more simple words, but this just means the FA can not take action, not that they maybe didn't want to. To do so now would undermine all referees. The FA have not chosen this they simply can not do anything else without dismantling the whole system. As for Atkinson, this puts him under real pressure. He has already copped it from Poll. His rep has been damaged and his position as the UK top ref and all the International jobs are at risk. Indeed nothing related to Barnes or Atkinson can benefit Chelsea or Matic now.
I can see why you find it annoying but there is a different between Barnes' challenge and Costa's stamp. The former happens during a game, yes its a very bad challenge and he deserved a red card for it but it was part of the game. The Costa stamp wasn't part of the game, he just felt like stamping on the player and rightly got punished for a such a stupid moment. Much like Matic as rightly been punished for a mad moment; no matter what the reasoning behind the react, you simply can't do that on a football pitch. However, the FA have shown incompetence again here because there is no way the challenge by Barnes should be going unpunished. It was a shocker and as some others have pointed out, it could have been a career threatening injury. I also thought the Joey Barton red card was a joke but the rules are the rules and you can't do it so he's rightly been punished.
That is a ridiculous rule the FA have, but as they have it I guess they must stick to it. No doubt I am in the minority but I didn't think it was that bad. It wasn't even a tackle, it was a pass. As with any pass there is some follow through and Matic's momentum took him into it. It looks nasty because of where he got caught but there was no excessive force or anything like that. All I would say is he may well of been able to pull his leg back to prevent contact with Matic. Matic's reaction was mindless. But agreed with the general consensus that the ref had a bad game.
They both deserve bans. Costa makes that challenge on Saturday and he's sidelined for 6 games. Guaranteed. I've seen people say similar for players who challenge for aerial balls with their elbows, Fellaini being a main culprit of this. That can be argued that it's part of the game, doesn't mean it doesn't deserve punishment. Barnes was playing recklessly all game and got away with it. You can't make tackles like that and get away with it, he'll end up breaking someone's ankle. Callum McMananman was rightly banned for his horrendous tackle vs Newcastle despite the ref not seeing it. Exactly the same principle should be applied here. Atkinson is an absolute embarassment.
McMananman actually escaped a ban which shows consistency.... i.e. consistently ****ing appalling decisions!! You let players like Barnes go around kicking everyone who is better than them then you will force technically gifted players out the league. The game should be physical but fair. As for Costa, the 'stamp' was un called for but was never ever going to hurt the player. I'd much rather someone stood on my ankle than broke my leg.
What a chief. That spoof is days old and since then West Ham have been caught at it too. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-31586198 Do you not get the newspapers under the Westway!
