Is there any wonder that the standards of refereeing have gone down hill so badly in recent times, when the assessor believe Atkinson got all 4 decisions right in Chelsea v Burnley.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...decisions-correct-Chelsea-s-draw-Burnley.html

Is he right or wrong. I thought it was a shocking display and until someone from the refs association actually comes out and makes statements regarding this the poor performances will continue.

The weekend really was a low point I feel. Southampton can also feel aggrieved at the standard of refereeing in their game against Liverpool and Palace were also cost points through bad officiating. I think the biggest surprise of the weekend is that we played Man Utd, finished with ten men and they were given only four minutes of injury time when a goal down!

The standards of refereeing has declined rapidly this season, but it's not helped by morons like that assessor.

Doesn't surprise me Trundles, the standard of refereeing has been going down year on year, This season has been chronic, and at least it's not just ourselves that are the recipients of such atrocious refereeing, time know for the Video Ref. in my view, to take these disgusting decisions out of the Referee's hands, it's costing valuable points and position in the table................<ok>

Swarbrick was the guy who reffed our game at Spurs last season - he gave the very soft penalty against Jonjo in the second half, balancing up his error in failing to award a "definite" penalty also against Jonjo in the first half.

Referees have an extremely difficult job, I'd even say an impossible job. The only experience of refereeing I have is that of officiating at youth level or occasionally 2nd XI games many moons ago now may I add, and whilst I enjoyed it, it was a difficult task strewn with errors I'm sure. Their job has been made much harder due to the pace the game is played at these days. Players diving at every opportunity also compounds the situation, falling over like they've been shot. You also have your regular TV pundits analysing any suspicious tackles or incidents and on most occasions needing numerous slow motion views of the incident to come to a conclusion and even then they sometimes disagree. The ref gets one look at it in real time, as a result errors are bound to occur. FIFA refusing to introduce modern technology is another stumbling block to getting decisions correct, look how long it took them to introduce goal line technology which has now eradicated the argument of was it over the line or not. Bring in technology to help referees is the way forward if you want to ensure the right decisions are made. Yes some referees are better than others but no referee will get all big calls right.

The problem with more technology is that soccer would become less human and we would lose the controversy which makes a great discussion point and is part of the enjoyment of the game. If you want sterile soccer play the computer games.

You get more bullshit refereeing decisions in 5 mins of FIFA 15 than you do in a season of real football <laugh>

    For Refs and assistants.

A League of Their Own - Cream will rise
Create a 'league of referees' with promotion and relegation. Good referees will rise and end up refereeing the big premiership games like Swansea vs Man Utd, while the crap ones get to referee the small games like Cardiff v A N Other.

Boot Camp - Beast the Basterds
With the science and technology available there is no reason or excuse for any referee not to be fit enough to do his/her job efficiently and effectively.
All refs fitness and skills regularly tested throughout the season. If bench marks not hit they MUST attend boot camp style course and get beasted into shape. Zero Tolerance

    Retrospective Sanctions - Cheat Hunt.
Each match revisited by a independent board armed with in depth guidelines and players analysed not referees.
Any player caught trying to influence a refereeing decision through diving, cheating or crying automatically receive a three game ban and their managers personally fined, Zero Tolerance.

Its time to treat referees as sportsmen and women and set their benchmarks accordingly. In order to obtain a licence, annually, the benchmarks MUST be achieved and maintained throughout the season. Very importantly though, they MUST be payd accordingly through a referees charity funded by refereeing agencies, all clubs, and sponsors.

    Sounds good to me

I agree with a lot of this but this season has seen so many clear cut decisions given and so many that were given that were not fouls. How Atkinson didn't see any of the 4 decisions is staggering, every one of them happened under his nose and he should have been able to make the correct decision. I agree that a lot of incidents are not always straight forward to call and I believe that refs actually are given allowances for those by most fans and media. However, there are so many basic blatant errors this year someone has to act.

I totally agree with your sentiments, obvious decisions are missed and refs do have bad days I was merely pointing out the difficult job they have. I also agree that retrospective action should be taken if a referee's performance is consistently poor. The introduction of a system where referees are allowed to speak to the media after matches for clarification of any contentious episodes that took place in that match should also be allowed. In my opinion everything is geared to protect referees rather than help them. Openness and honesty is the best way forward.
