You are spot on to a degree but those companies are foreign owned and while the factories do supply jobs and add wealth to our economy the vast profits that they make leave for overseas. However, SN is right also because we manufature far less than we used to, why ? Because of the way the Unions crippled our manufacturing industry in the late 60s and throughout the 70s with unrealistic pay demands. It should also be remembered that what we were producing at that time was of a poor quality especially within the car industry.
England's only industry now is keeping the bank heads happy. We have no exports. The heart of the country was scooped out in the 80's and the UK is nothing but a shell of it's former self. Something our politicians and lots of our public seem to not have noticed.
They are at the top of the chain but these factories support 100s of British owned suppliers further down the supply chain which can only be a good thing for the economy. You are right KIO about the dark days of the 60s and 70s when Union power all but destroyed our manufacturing industry. There was a guy who worked for BL back in the 1970s who was so disillusioned with life here that he went over to Korea with a few others and went on to found Hyundai!
I don't want to argue with anyone on here I don't even vote . Back in my father's day most people could own their own home without crippling mortgages the car he drove was British made and owned the TV was probably British made the house was made by British people the oven fride furniture crockery etc . This kept people in jobs and they spent their money generating pubs selling English beer buying clothes made here and so on. I don't want to sound UKIP they are horrible but If we outsource all our work and encourage migrant workers to fill the factories we have left and use robots and I T systems to do the other jobs then unemployment will just increase, it has to. That's all I am saying and I can't see things improving.
...You could go out and have a slap up meal, Nightclub after, Taxi home and still have change out of a Fiver!
I'm all for the zeitgeist idea that technology can replace the need for jobs and money, all it takes it the rich giving up their ridiculously disproportionate hold over society and spreading it around a little.
The rot had set in by the end of the 70s mate, we had industries that were outdated and inefficient producing poor quality goods and as the country entered a major recession too much money was needed to bring them into the 20th century, as a result nealry all had to close.
Instead of worrying about what other people have or haven't got all the time, wouldn't it be far better if people got off their arses and actually worked hard to better themselves to improve their own lives! Just a thought.
Haha, I'm not right now but the idea of revolution is certainly spreading around. The internet has given everyone access to this sort of information, and public opinion, certainly of the youth, is changing drastically. Theres a reason politicians are trying to sensor the internet! They don't want people to think for themselves, "just take in our nicely laid out media and be a happy little drone.".
I fully understand that, I really do. When I was studying Modern British Politics at A level, I remember thinking "I guess Thatcher didn't really have much choice". I still think it's contributed the most to what is a fairly rotten society today.
The thing is there are now so many families where kids are growing up thinking that it is the norm not to work and live on benefits. Cameron wants youngsters to 'earn' their benefits but you can bet your bottom dollar that the Labour party will be dead against it so as not to upset their core vote. Makes me laugh that the word 'labour' means 'to work' yet most of their support comes from those who've never done a hard days work in their lives ! The Labour party even wants to give the vote to 16 year old kids because they know they are more likely to have a socialist mentality. I'm not saying I agree totally with Tory policy but at the moment I just see them as the best of a bad lot. I shall definitely vote in May but I will have to do a lot of soul searching before I put that cross in that box
Please stop talking so much common sense KIO as all these 'likes' I'm giving you will go down badly with my Townie buddies!
I'm voting Green for 4 reasons. 1. They don't have any wealthy financial backers to appeases with their policies, everything in their manifesto is for the people, the way government should be. 2. They are the only party that is thinking about 20/30 years in the future. Modern politicians for the most part are more interested in fulfilling their own ends and making sure they are elected now rather than actually worrying about the future. The furthest they look ahead is 5 years. 3. They are a true democratic party. If you become a member you get a say on every policy in their manifesto. I happen to disagree with a few of their policies but by becoming a member I can voice my own opinion on the matter and get it heard. 4. They are completely different from anything we currently have. Labour, Tory, UKIP, even Lib Dems are mostly the same old club that decided they want to go into politics because that's a good stepping stone for a career in some high up business once they are done being an MP. Obviously of course I agree with a huge amount of their manifesto as well.
I see no reason why 16 year olds shouldn't get the vote in this country KIO. Most 16 year olds seem to be more interested in politics than adults twice their age these days!
I find myself in a similar position. Simply because even if the government in power (regardless of who it was) had a perfectly effective and functioning policy, the opposition would have to 'reinvent' so as to not look as to be having an 'impact' on policy and not copying the other We tend to lurch from one policy reinvention to another. As much as I am indifferent to all the political parties. There is certainly an argument for 'better the devil you know' just to avoid such a major reorganisation every 5 years
And the Greens want to scrap all of our Armed Forces and Nuclear Deterrent at this time of immense volatility with RUSSIA. Yep thats a great idea!
did you hear the greens leader on LBC today? car crash or what, and the poor little love tried to blame it on a tickly throat!
I think they are happy starting wars in a land grab for the last natural resources and keep us in perpetual debt, there are too many people alive and another big war or Ebola/ bird flu cull would trim the numbers I think the idea that people chose to live off benefits is in large a myth Warky, there are fewer and fewer jobs now. Zero hour contracts for ****s sake ? If we have so much work available by all means bring in help from abroad to fill them but i have seen with my own eyes massive companies making tens of millions profit a year make widespread redundancies to replace their mainly home grown workforce with migrant workers . Simply because they can slash the wage bill by 30%. My old boss Damien Aspinall did exactly this and his second cousin is George ****ing Osborne . The promises lies and backhanders given out to win the license and build Europes biggest casino have all been forgotten just 3 years later. Mick the site owner works in an online bookies just a small operation but they have been pushed out by goverment legislation to stop any competition for the big corporate sites. Somehow Tesco has over extended themselves and Aldi and Lidl are expanding and we all think it's great ,but they are both German like your Bosch drill and kitchen and if you are doing well Merc or BMW. The Germans are the only succesful nation in Europe because they have a thriving export industry , they started at 0 after WW2 with no debt and no arms spending because they couldn't be trusted and enforced labour rights that the UN drafted. Same for the Japanese. It doesn't matter where you go in the World you will see VW Siemens Toyota Panasonic etc etc , GB does not have these brands anymore.
It was a car crash interview she couldn't give Humphreys any straight answers as to where all the money was going to come from to fund all of these grandiose schemes.
