I must say, the old Queen's Dock looks much more majestic than the Gardens there now, which could do with a good bit of TLC. Would have been very nice if that area was also turned into a Marina.
Damn you Adolf you desecrated what was an elegant city in its day the more I see old pics of Hull the more I am saddened. I go to the History Museum and just look through the many books with pictures of fine buildings, one my faves being the Prudential Tower. I still remember the trawlers docked where Princes Quay now stands and where Lipmans had a clothes shop which I think is now the Sony computer shop.
Where and what was the Prudential tower? Was that the building next to City Hall where Next used to be? I have seen some pics of that building if that is the one you speak of
I think someone on here put me onto this YouTube compilation before, but good to share again in case some haven't seen it
Wow didn't realize it was that many, I wish I knew more about our war history is there any books on it?
Yes thanks for that OLM, i wondered if that was the one. Such a shame to lose buildings like that. How much more impressive would the City Centre have been with that building reaching for the sky
There's a potted history here, along with some books detailed at the bottom... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hull_Blitz
Here is another site of pics that i had saved, which strangely enough had the Prudential Tower shown http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=985858
We lived in the middle of an industrial area that was a regular target for German bombers .. One night as we were all filing into the air raid shelter Mam dashed back into the house. "Where are you going, Mary," said Dad. "Back for my false teeth," she replied. "Come back here, the Germans are dropping bombs not meat pies," shouted Dad. —Barbara Belcher, Hull, What a quote
Who would need the Shambles in York, if Hull still had these buildings please log in to view this image
By way of comparison, 45,000 killed in Hamburg in one raid. Brunswick, where we had a preseason friendly is more or less same population. In the whole war Hull had 4,000 tons of bombs dropped on it. Brunswick had 10,000 tons dropped on it in one raid (the highest tonnage of bombs dropped in a single raid). Both places were rebuilt by 1960. No buildings remaining with damage or bomb sites used as car parks over 50 years later there.
Just goes to show that all sides are as bad as each other when it comes to desecrating countries heritages. We look at countries in eastern europe and wonder how they can ruin cities like that yet we have done the same to others.
