I love Quorn and eat it regularly – fortunately, never had any sort of negative reaction to it and neither has anyone I know.

I’ll admit my ignorance in this field, but I know enough to take the blog/article you link with a pinch of salt; anyone trying to make a serious, considered point who concludes with “In my opinion, it should be banned” is about as academically sound as Hamilton Academicals.

That said, I’d be open to reconsidering my opinion at any point on Quorn, as I would of any food I eat. If Quorn are genuinely being all secretive about their produce, then I agree, they should be, like any producer, be accountable and open.

    What about Dietmar Hamann?

Do you think he has a brother who's called Mar and is a massive lard-arse? I do hope so.

I can say for definite LTT that similar results to those in the first study mentioned on this page were achieved when the studies were replicated by the parent company in the late 90s/early 00s.

Similar results were also found in tests that were carried out on Guinea Pigs, Rats & Dogs around the same time. All results remain unpublished.

The mycoprotein producing subsidiary was sold by the parent company within 18 months of these replicated tests been completed for £72m. It was subsequently sold on again two years later for £172m suggesting that the original sale was done it on the cheap, maybe because they wanted rid ASAP.

    Thanks Ben.

So, to be succinct, the general gist is that some people (perhaps 1 in 10 or 1 in 20) are allergic to Quorn?

In your opinion, as it sounds like it’s the area you work in, would you advise me or anyone else who eats it, to rethink about eating Quorn? Or, only if they display some of the symptoms or possess other allergies described?

What reaction did we get from the bench when scoring the winner yesterday and in general. Do most of the subs get up and celebrate? Normally the cameras just focus on Bruce.

The FDA are continually being pressed to reclassify Quorn's status from "Generally Recognized as Safe" based mainly on the fact that prior to classification mycoprotein had not previously been used in food products. The manufacturers had previously asked for it to be classified as a food additive which would require it to meet more stringent criteria. Many Quorn products carry a health warning on the packaging, they are being pressed to include it more prominantly on all packaging

I'm no expert, but I was involved with many of the replicated studies & as a result saw the unpublished results first hand. I wouldn't touch it, I believe if others saw it in it's raw form they wouldn't either.

Would you touch coke in its uncoloured, green form?

    Ta.

Apart from the allergic reactions your link described, from mild to severe, have any hidden long term effects been suggested from eating Quorn?

I’ve never heard of someone putting two patties inside one breadcake before.

It mustabindone by someone, somewhere (well in Hull & ER).

Had a patty in Brid when I was a kid. It was rock hard in the centre - put me off for years.

From what I remember (it was around 15 years ago) the clinical signs were mainly apparent after accumulated exposure. Erythema, edema, skin sensitivity, vomiting & loose faeces. There was also intestinal swelling noted at necropsy.
