Just curious as to what Toon fans think about this. Personally, while I agree that it's a pretty abhorrent way to treat somebody, and to a certain extent the media frenzy is quite good for deterring future incidents, the proposed punishment (banning from ever following the club again) seems a bit at odds with society in general. You don't get life for stabbing someone in the chest 77 times and then Call of Duty style tea-bagging the corpse, yet calling someone names and making someone get a metro 2 minutes later is punishable by a life-time ban from watching a game?

I don't mean to suggest anybody should go easy on them, they're idiots, I'd be fine with a jail sentence, but it seems odd not to give them a chance to redeem themselves at all and issue archaic bans... Fighting racism is a process of education and rehabilitation, so it seems a bit radical to not present them with that opportunity.

I'd have said £100 compo each to the chap, community service for 6 months and a ban from following Chelsea for those 6 months would have been sufficient.

Totally agree. The incident has been blown up out of all proportion.

I disagree. Why would the club wish to be associated with those people ever again?

I think that the club has done the right thing and, for once, I support something that CFC are doing.

6 months would be far too lenient. Set an example of these morons and Chelsea lets the rest of their fans know that this behaviour is NOT ok. Shame they still have a proven racist as captain however.

I appreciate a difference in opinion, but I think too many people are quick to the, "once a <fill in the blank>, always a <fill in the blank", and that's as I say, fundamentally at odds with the legal justice system. If life imprisonment is wrong, so too are life-bans from football clubs. I'm a pro-education, rather than pro-authoritarian, because the latter stance, while having short-term effectiveness, potentially supports long-term insubordination and resentment.

There should definitely have been punishment, but I think more should have been done on a criminal level (it is breaking the law after all), rather than having the media create a ****storm and leave Chelsea with the ramifications. it shouldn't be up to them really. I mean, does Mike Ashley roll his fat arse in front of the camera every time a Chav empties the contents of his brain in graffiti whilst wearing a Lonsdale hoody? I don't think so.

If the crime does not warrant a 16 year prison sentence, a life-ban from watching football is unfathomable in pure logic terms!

I actually agree with you 100%.
There's too much flag rallying and sabre rattling by the press and indeed the establishment.

There could be a million cameras in a million locations around the world every day, and every one could capture racism. Stephen Hawking has it right, that the anger within us could well destroy us. And whilst he may claim empathy is the solution, it's not, well not in the sense that turning the empathy switch to 'on' is so simple. We're all angry at someone, about something, but we rarely know what, or who. And "accepting" it to simply love one another doesn't work, because that person we're hugging might have more money, or a nicer car.

Fascinating that the basics of communism would work, but we won't accept it simply because the thought of being the same as everyone else is utterly unacceptable. Fabulous paradox. Eradicate racism by making all men equal. But what if I want a bigger car?........

Communism would work only as long as you have capitalism to fund it

I'm sorry but I disagree. total nobs as far as I am concerned. Don't deserve the privilege to stand with the real fans and cheer their team.

Agree life ban out of sync with the offence. Murder doesn't get life, not in real terms. Long ban of say 5 years and then if they come back be monitored for a further say two year period to see if have changed ways.

That being said I wouldn't criticise Chelsea as they have done something and not tried to ignore and hope it goes away.

Playing devil's advocate slightly, but the supporters involved are clearly die hard supporters who follow their team away from home, the kind that garner special praise for being exactly that, "real fans". Real fans can have objectionable views as human beings though, but I understand I'm being a bit unnecessarily pedantic, and that you meant people that can support the club and represent it without acting like idiots.

Just because they go to away games supposedly as fans doesn't make them worthy to represent their club and our country abroard. As far as I am concerned until you prove otherwise through your actions towards others we are all equal. behave like that towards your fellow man and I say fk it, cut them off there will be better men/women/children to fill their seats.

Well then you've just burned your own point!

How can they show contrition? They aren't being afforded the opportunity, they're just being banned for life, which is the essence of my point. Be firm, absolutely, but educate, don't dictate.

broardly I agree. But they are not being banged up here. if they were to demonstrate that they are capable of being part of civilised society through their actions only then should they be afforded the opportunity to have any ban reviewed. it is almost certain that they are a complete bunch of bell ends however so will not be man enough to show any kind of remorse.
