Sturridge can't complain about not giving the responsibility. It's a shame he didn't celebrate properly with the team, but at least once the decision was made he shut up and got back on with his job, didn't cause a big argument and distract Balotelli anymore.
To be fair the replay looked as you described. Still Henderson should have taken control and let who the agreed penalty taker was take it. Sturridge scored on his debut for us in every competition, apart from Europa now...
Hendo has said Mario's taking this one. Sturridge wanted it so started arguing with Hendo and Balo. Hendo has told Sturridge to do one and walked off saying FFS at him. Balo then gives Hendo a hug after he's scored for taking charge and letting him have it.
Top result. Not the best performance, still lacked a bit in the final 3rd but clean sheet and a goal, means score at their place and pretty much through.
Watch the replay. It's Sturridge moaning, Hendo tells him to back off and lets Mario take it. That's a good decision. I'd let Balo take one any day of the week over Sturridge.

Looked like Hendo wanted to take it to me. I wasn't bothered who took it so long as they didn't argue about it. However, my preferred option would be Mario, if he has one world class quality is taking a penalty.
Since Super Mario returned with his dodgy tash. 2 goals and 1 assist in 3 games. 1 goal got us 2 extra points in the league. 1 goal gave us a vital win in EL 1 assist gave us the win in the FA Cup. Even ignoring his penalty tonight, I thought he was brilliant. came on, held the ball, was big and strong, laid it off into peoples feet.
