Skysports.com understands Nottingham Forest have made an approach for Newcastle winger Wayne Routledge.

New Forest boss Steve McClaren is in the process of piecing together a squad he hopes will be good enough to take the club back into the Premier League.

He has already added the creative talents of Andy Reid to his ranks, bringing the Republic of Ireland international back to the City Ground for a second spell.

McClaren is, however, of the opinion that further attacking recruits are required and believes Routledge would be a useful addition.

The 26-year-old midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at former employers Queens Park Rangers and helped to guide them to the Championship title.

It was expected that he would return to Loftus Road this summer on a permanent deal, but no such agreement has been put in place.

That has left the door open for Forest to make their move, with efforts to lure Routledge to Nottingham now under way.

Routledge is open to the prospect of a summer switch away from St James' Park, especially as Alan Pardew has drafted in further midfield cover during the transfer window, but must decide where his next move will take him.

Reports suggest Leicester may decide to challenge East Midlands rivals Forest for his signature, while Birmingham have also been linked with the former England U21 international of late.

IF he goes to Forest, it'll be interesting to see what them and Leicester are like next season.

I wouldnt mind keeping him as a squad player to be hoenst though. He cant be on mega wages or anything... Seem to be lacking natural right footed wingers as well. Depends how much money was offered i guess though.

He's better than several of our 'squad players'. People say he can't cut it in the prem, but I see him making a good impact sub especially vs mid to lower table teams and especially going on a few performances this last season when he made some good runs that could catch out a tired full back.

Sell as soon as. Never going to cut it in the PL. Final ball is awful. Seems destined to be a yoyo player, too good for the fizzy pop, not good enough for the PL. Thing with him is I think a fair bit is down to him not believing he's good enough. He's had that many go's at a variety of clubs without ever nailing down a place, I think he doubts himself. He won't go at his man whereas in the fizzy he just shifts it past them and goes. Obv the PL is a higher standard, they're fitter, faster, stronger but I still think it's a confidence thing.

I think WR has the ability to be a decent PL player - Pardew saying that he's "not good enough to play for Newcastle United" really doesn't improve the chances of him staying here...<doh>

  9. He'd be a decent impact player. Lets stop selling players just because we get a good bid in.

Would rather keep LuaLua or play Raylor than him - I would only suggest keeping Routlege if he was played just off the striker - he is no winger

  13. Lets just see what happens. Before Routledge i'd get rid of Smith, Perch, Xisco and Shola. <ok>

Nope, just think he has never been given a chance here and the couple of times I have seen him he has been better than Lova and Ameobi

  17. He's played 9 games, scored 1 goal and got suspended for 3 games after a fowl in a reserves match <doh>

    He's robbed us blind.

  19. "Great" assist vs a **** Villa defense, and the 6th goal of the game. Wasn't even that good, nor worthy of a chance.

His record speaks for itself, the only side he's been on in which he has a decent goal scoring record is Deportiva B side.

Everywhere else he's been ****. Can't wait to get rid of him and his ridiculous wages
