The team seems to look good at times but then go through spells of looking hopeless. The team looks good enough (to me) to be in a 10-14th spot in the table and yet struggle to maintain that level. I am surprised by the level of dislike he has fostered and it seems to be from what he has said in the media as much as anything on the pitch but I'd be wary of making too much of that, many managers come across as arseholes in the media you just want to make sure your arsehole is doing its job and not stinking the place up too badly when it makes noises.

I thinks he's still in charge because,
    A) We had a marvelous run to the cup final
    B) We stayed up last season which was fantastic.

Based on my last point I think ES may think he's still got something in him to get us out of this terrible patch of form. What I'm questioning so far is how Inconsistent we've been, if you look at our 4 wins they've been spread out far too much. With this current group of players their seems to be a mentality problem after a win, great win at SJP then spanked by hulls reserves at home wtf? Good result against burnley then a decent point away at the liberty followed by playing another struggling team qpr into form. Our midfield is slow, we lack a creative combo, getting spanked by the saints has prob made Gus a little too tentative. I believe the best managers in the world are always looking to improve their own formula/tactics this helps them grow and it installs belief within the team. At present I'm wondering if some of our team are questioning gp's gameplan? They weren't happy with pdc and voiced their concerns getting their own way. Depending on how we play against WBA (which is my 30th) then I'll have a clearer picture on whether I think he's worth keeping at the club.

David Jones column: Why Gus Poyet MUST stay in charge at Sunderland
please log in to view this image

"HOW quickly the ground can slip from beneath your feet in football.
Just as it seemed Sunderland were building momentum by beating Burnley at home and then putting away Fulham with a dominant display in London, here we are back at square one.
It wasn’t just losing against QPR and Bradford that hurt, it was the manner of those defeats, falling well short of what is expected of a team wearing the Sunderland shirt.
The quality comes and goes, but where was the fight, where was the urgency?
In truth we could go back through the entire season – perhaps even the last several years – pinpointing false dawns, evidence of progress followed swiftly by painful defeat.
And is this all Gus Poyet’s fault?

How can you judge a manager when you’re not sure he even signed the players? Whose decision was it to spend the bulk of the summer budget on Jack Rodwell from Manchester City?
And how can you judge a manager on his signings when you don’t know where he’s allowed to do his shopping?
We could all go to Harrods and come back with a beautiful new toy that lasts for years, but it’s a lot harder to get one from Poundland that doesn’t fall apart after a fortnight.
Taking Billy Jones and Jordi Gomez for nothing looked like shrewd business in the summer especially when you consider how short Sunderland were on numbers after losing the bulk of last season’s team: Bardsley, Alonso, Ki, Colback and Borini, who have all been mightily missed.
Liam Bridcutt was the most talked about player in the Championship when Poyet took him from his former club Brighton.
Will Buckley, too, was worth a gamble at that price, while Ricky Alvarez looked like a last minute throw of the dice.

But to my mind, Sunderland are still paying the price for allowing Roberto De Fanti loose with the club’s coffers.
The next manager in was always going to have a mighty rebuilding job on his hands after De Fanti’s shambolic and expensively scattergun approach to recruitment.
So, do we really want to see the back of a manager who somehow kept Sunderland in the Premier League last season and at the same time delivered us a trip to Wembley?
    And what happens then?
Another manager comes through the revolving door with another entirely new backroom staff.
They bring with them another style of play which the director of football must accommodate in his recruitment, dispensing with months of scouting and lists of targets.

That new manager has to go cap in hand to his boss, begging for a slice of the incredible TV deal which is just about to fall into his lap. And when those funds aren’t forthcoming, we find ourselves here again.
It might be painful to hear, but in terms of squad quality and depth, Sunderland have fallen way behind the likes of West Ham, Stoke and even arguably Hull City!
Unfortunately it’s going to take more mighty investment from Ellis Short to change that, whoever is in charge.
Of course I’m conveniently ignoring the fact that Poyet has some huge bridge building to do with the Sunderland fans and indeed media after his recent post match outbursts.
No one hates losing more than Poyet – and quite frankly, he’s just not very good at it.
I think sometimes he would be better served dodging the post match inquest, biting his tongue and taking a fine – and that from someone whose company made sure compulsory pre and post match manager interviews were part of the last TV contract.

Be in no doubt that Sunderland fans are not at fault here, but nor do I think Gus Poyet should be shouldering all the blame for the teams current woes.
For Sunderland to progress as a stable, successful Premier League club, I believe Poyet has to stay.
But first he has to win back your support and the only way he can do that is with results, starting on Saturday. Keep the faith."

Where do I start with that pile of ****.

Poyet has already said he has the final sayings on players. You ****ing telling me he didn't sign Coates, Bridcock and Buckley? Of course he did and who is Jones kidding. Bridcock was the most talk about player in the championship LOL do me a favour.

Yes de fantis **** up but we didn't spend anything. We broke even that summer end of.

The style of play is Boring Mr Jones and the only thing I agree with is Mr short is being a tight ****.

I've gone for get rid at the end of the season and would like to replace him with Big Sam.

However, if Big Sam becomes available before the end of the season (as things could turn sour for him at WHU if the speculation is to be believed) I would bin Gus and bring in Sam then

I don`t see any other manager changing the way in which our team plays - we consistently but at best mediocre players (MON, Bruce and Gus) and hang on to PL status by the skin of our teeth.

Some of the time we look good, most of the time we look average and some of the time we are ****e - hasn`t that always been the lot of a sunderland fan?

We`ll not attract a "big name" manager, we`ll always struggle to attract top quality players in thier prime - we will therefore always struggle...

Gus is no worse than many we have had and I reckon last year earns him the right to go the full season with us this.

In terms of his relationship with the fans - I`d give him a bit of time - somewhere someone has mentioned him skipping press conferences and taking a fine - for now I think that wouldn`t be a bad idea; to me he just seems as pissed off as the rest of us with the performance and loses his head a bit.

Am worried about the weekend though...

Aye I still want him gone. We may nick a win against West brom but one result doesn't change my mind.

We won 4 games all season so ****ing no chance we win 6 games in a row.

I've not voted, I never do on votes for other teams. I'll give my view though(and it is that you may as well stick with him unless you genuinely look like getting relegated - and I don't think you do at the moment). I think Sam would be a good fit for you guys but only if you accept his football, maybe he's changed as he claims but at Newcastle it was ****ing dire to watch, we even started the season alright with him in charge and yet it was hard to enjoy as he brought in mediocre players to play dull football. To be fair though I suspect we wouldn't have gone down with him in charge.
