Google told me Die Hard was based on a novel. Die Hard > all.

First Blood is also based on a novel.
I went for Jaws, because although the novel and movie are VERY different, its an adaptation.
People always slated the Jaws novel but its one of my favourite books.
Brody is more grizelled, cynical and childish in the books, the first thing he does when he meets Hooper is weigh up whether he thinks he could take him in a fight, which he concludes he could, and we find out he is correct later when Brody acostes Hooper for sleeping with Brody's wife. Much darker is the book. Speilburg did a good job of making a movie about a killer fish who eats people and Mafia corruption in to a family movie.
Not sure the novel as it was would have worked as a movie, though i would love to see a strict adaptation of the novel done as a mini series at some point, maybe 6, 1 hour long episodes or something.

    Not a Hollywood movie.
    A HBO Mini series.
That way it would have the correct amount of violence, sex and swearing that the book had.
I would just like to see a proper adaptation of the book is all.
The movie was great and one of my favourite films, but its something entirely different from the book.

It's the tag that every sad sap 'man' who was dragged along to see '50 shades of fanny batter' last weekend, should wear with shame <laugh>

The Road to Perdition is another favourite of mine, not sure which category it fits in - adaptation of a graphic novel also crime/thriller.

I bet there is a director or two you'd pick though.... who would you choose to direct such an epic to make it as "nasty" as you describe said book...

bearing in mind there is a dangr hbo would make it into GoT (as much as got is good its hard great acting or anything)
