...have folded! For people who aren't aware of them they were the Man City of Romania. Though they were taken over in the Second Division. They were promoted the following season and qualified for Europe. Then they won the league for the first time in their history, breaking the Bucharest dominance, the following season. They were placed in the following seasons Champions League where they finished 3rd in a group containing Rangers, Sevilla and Stuttgart, even hammering Rangers 4-1 in Glasgow. They were eventually knocked out of the Last 16 by Liverpool. Anyway last season they sold all of their best players because the owner was skint, loaned a load of players and were relegated. This season the owner didn't even bother getting a licence to play in the Second Division for next season and ****ed off with all his money including the money they earned from playing in the Champions League! http://scoutingromania.com/2011/07/06/unirea-urziceni-no-longer-exists-as-a-club/
No I was just refering to the fact that they come up from the lower divisions. Plus I hope the City owners end up doing what the Unirea owner has done...
A lot of Eastern European clubs lose their licence, only to later be reformed by supporters. But in Unirea's case they didn't have many supporters, so this might not happen. Small town club with a rich owner, perhaps comparable with Hoffenheim in Germany. Dan Petrescu was Unirea's manager. He's now managing Kuban Krasnodar in Russia, another shady club. He needs to watch who he works for.
