actually i would slightly disagree with you. if England had to pick a team today i would say that Kane should be picked ahead of Welbeck as he is at at the moment red hot for scoring and Welbeck has gone off the boil at moment. if team was being picked in 3 months time then we can only see where Kane is at, and as he is English i hope he improves/continues development [whilst obviously wishing Spuds play badly]

Fair assessment. I would like to see Woy give him 45 mins to see how he does. I think he'll stick with Welbeck to start though.

The picking of Welbeck is tactical. England have Sturridge (when fit), Sterling and Rooney for the forward positions. All are best on the counterattack or when the game is open. Lambert gets brought on when someone is needed to play the target man role - usually when England are looking to see out games. Whilst Kane's form earns him a chance as the most in form English striker, it's hard to see how he fits in - except perhaps in a friendly when Hodgson tinkers with his formation/style of play.

I think that's why it's best not to just throw him into the current set up. He needs some understanding with players around him.

Is he good enough well yes but should he be called up I hope not.

Reason why is there's a U21 tournament coming up and the likes of Kane Berahino Ings etc should stay with the U21 squad and build up and get an understanding for the tournament.

We really have a decent chance of winning especially if they get sterling and a few others going.

the lad is certainly good enough albeit not experienced enough, a few friendlies under his belt or no competition qualifier games against minnows just to get the jist of it.

There will be a big clamour for his selection now he's the leading English goalscorer by some distance.

No, not in the PL alone - Charlie Austin is. But he won't get picked.

Harry Kane has won the January 2015 Player of the Month Award (official announcement tomorrow lunchtime).

Congratulations to the lad - it's very well deserved and let's hope it's just the first of many!

Indeed. What an impact he has had on the Premiership. Let's hope he can continue it.

I hope the Premier League doesn't have an impact on him.

...wait, I meant to say "Charlie Adam", not "the Premier League."

Obviously, he will be a marked man from now on. How he copes with that, remains to be seen.

England manager Roy Hodgson has all but confirmed Tottenham striker Harry Kane will be in his squad for next month's double-header with Lithuania and Italy.

Hodgson described the 21-year-old, who has scored 23 goals in 35 games this season, as combining "everything you're looking for in a centre forward".

"Is he worth a place in the squad now? Of course he is," said Hodgson.

Captain Wayne Rooney is likely to continue in attack, despite adopting a new midfield role at Manchester United.

In a lengthy interview, the England boss also said:
    • Burnley striker Danny Ings, who has scored five times in his last seven matches, had impressed him and is someone they "need to keep an eye on".
    • Liverpool's 19-year-old winger Jordon Ibe would have to "jump over a lot of young players" before he could be considered for the national team, despite his impressive club form.
    • West Brom striker Saido Berahino's drink driving conviction was not a concern and that the issue "was closed" after the player had been reprimanded by his club.
    • Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling, 20, was getting "more and more mature" with each performance.
Kane, who only made his first Premier League start for Spurs in April, is currently the joint-leading English goalscorer in the top flight, level with QPR's Charlie Austin on 13.

"We bought a lot of young players in during my time, we had Saido Berahino in the last squad. [Kane] certainly deserves a place in the squad as much as say Saido did," added Hodgson.

"Is he worthy of a place like Wayne Rooney, [Danny] Welbeck and [Daniel] Sturridge? That's something he'll have to prove.

"But unless I give him a chance in the squad he'll never get a chance to prove that anyway.

"If you can be a star at a top team like Tottenham at the age of 21 then you're doing pretty well."

My concern about Harry Kane for England is not just that the classic England injury will rear its head, but that England under Roy Hodgson play in a very different way to Pochettino's Spurs - almost the polar opposite. Kane has looked good for the England U21s but they play a fluid 4-3-3 and crucially, they've grown as a group and play for each other. You don't see this with the Senior National team, who don't press high up the pitch and don't usually inject any pace into their buildup. If Kane is deployed as a striker by Hodgson and tries to press, nobody will go with him and the defenders will just pass the ball around him. Hopefully he can be as effective in a slower, less intense playing style, we'll see.

I still think that sticking with the U21 group and going to the Euros in the Summer (which I hope he does regardless of a Senior call up) is the best option for him. If he keeps improving then there is a bigger future for him with England than being another one-cap-wonder dismissed because England play largely crap football.

Whether he's good enough at this point or not should be put to one side, England need a player like Kane to play up top.

The England team has become disjointed and reliant on sub standard players to do jobs in roles that don't suit them. Kane solves a problem and makes it easier to choose a team around him, that's not to say that you build the team around him just that the pieces now fit easier with him in the team.

The problem now is Roy and his inability to change his formation to fit what he has available. Play a 4-3-3 and you now have a front 3 of...........

    Studge------------Sterling
    ------------Kane-------------

Both Studge and Sterling can play the channels and England have full backs that can provide width so it would make sense to adapt to this formation.

For the Rooney fans either play him tip of a diamond or instead of Sterling but regardless you know have a potent attacking team with options in Welbeck, Lallana and Barkley.

The midfield is now the problem but that's another argument. <whistle>

He's got to be halfway to the February one too with the performance against Arsenal and a goal and assist against Liverpool. Just West Ham left to perform against.

imo Roy should drop Rooney to get Kane in so he see that he has the ability as the higher level, and also whilst he is bang on form and full of confidence- but knowing Roy he will resist and wait till he is out of form and lacking confidence and then play him for 10 minutes whilst persevering with Rooney who is playing crap but is skipper so has to play
