Has to be RIDGEWAY STORM, for me, in the ‘lucky last’ at Chelmsford City tomorrow evening (8.10). As my regular readers will be aware this one, who is trained in the county and owned by the forum’s second favourite owner, Mr Ponsonby, is one of my current faves having done me a couple of nice turns these past few months. The old boy won his maiden at the backend of October and has since gone on to post 3 highly creditable performances in handicaps – including a win off 79 and a close 3rd off 81 last time out. Raised to 82 here that still looks a workable mark for Ridgeway Storm whose debut over hurdles is being put on hold, for the time being, as connections believe there are nice prizes on the level to be won with him first. He’s relished the step up to 2 miles and I think will prove too good for his opponents tomorrow. Good luck, crew.
I'm off to a funeral today - those of you who were on the Newmarket stud farm visit in 2013 may remember Dave, the little old boy that sat up front in the mini-bus. He didn't really have much interest in horse racing, but was very inquisitive about things he didn't know much about. He enjoyed that day, even though he wouldn't have known who the horses were (I think he DID know of Frankel!) Lung cancer is a ****er Sentiment has no place in horse race betting, but I'm having a bob or two on The Ould Lad in the 2-40 Leicester. Good luck those who play today, and if you lose - it's your own fault, I told you to leave these egg n spoon races alone!
Good old cliff horse for me today, the ever keen Meadowcroft Boy. Needs to learn to settle and is up against it at the ratings with Hawk High, if they can switch him off we should see a lot of improvement and trip looks ideal.
Best of luck with The Ould Lad reebs, hope he wins for you to cheer up what must be a sombre day .....................
Sorry to hear your new Reebs. Mine for today: Fontwell 220 Ewings 320 Laurium 420 Miller of Glanmire Meydan 320 Tha'ir 355 Ajwad 430 Reynaldothewizard Thurles 235 Rye Martini 405 Speed Demon 505 Alamein trust me if anybody can get a Gigginstown horse beat its me!!! Thurles 435 Gary (what a beautiful name)
With a little luck in running Mikeys EMPIRE STORM can run a big race at Meydan today and the 20-1 on offer is worth an each way dabble. Very underrated horse imo.
Afternoon, all. Don't often post on day-to-day racing matters across the winter, but Barney's post leads me to put up a topic for consideration. I've not been betting at Chelmsford until I had - or thought I had - some sort of handle on the nature and characteristics of the racing surface. Close watching and timing over the past couple of weeks seem to indicate that it's behaving closer to fibresand than polytrack - put more simply, it's running more akin to Southwell than to Wolves or Kempton - and you might not want to overrate Ridgeway Storm's recent form at those two tracks. At around 5-4 (Kingscombe N/R, as predicted) RS really looks very short against a proven fibresand horse in Teajaybe, and if it goes any shorter I'll be laying him. That said, he's certainly on an upward curve, probably already a better horse than Teajaybe, and the 3 lb ratings difference simply looks wrong. But you get funny results when horses take to - or take against - a surface, and it might be wiser to watch than bet.
Hugh Taylor wrote in his ATR column today... "I’m not especially attracted by Chelmsford’s card today, the feature there being the number of proven Fibresand performers that are turning up, notably from the Mick Appleby yard, clearly a sign of how deep connections feel the track is riding at the new venue. It’s true that there have been one or two apparent Southwell specialists winning there lately, but it’s probably too early to be saying there’s a strong correlation between the two tracks in my opinion and I’ll just be watching today’s card to see how things develop." Great Minds...
There was a piece in yesterday’s ‘Weekender’ predicting doom and gloom for Chelmsford as both field sizes and crowd numbers have fallen since they first opened. Re today’s heats the first 3 events look healthy, in terms of numbers, but the last 3 have a total, now, of just 14 runners. And there is over £20k up for grabs in these concluding 3.
Afternoon chaps.tough card at Clonmel so small stakes only 4.05-Goulane Chosen(2/1) was second to russian bill at Naas lto which reads well 4.35-very tricky 18 runner hcapp but I think Old Time Melody(11/2) can go close following win lto
What’s that old rogue Tony Martin up to with the former Pipe inmate Buddy Bolero?!? Answers on a postcard please to the usual address...
Noticed he's quoted @ 33/1 for the Lincoln at Sunny Donny 28th March Two runners up for Charlie Long's today, his last 4 runners have all been placed, running into a bit of form? Good Luck
Are the Crookmakers having a laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!! Glingerburn Wins the 3:00 Kelso @ SP 14/5 Is that 3/1 minus 5% TAX?????? Do these "Modern day" Crookmakers still lay proper odds on course like 100/6? which was 16/1 prior to decimalisation 100/7 (14/1) and 100/8 (12/1)? I haven't been racing for a very long time!
Talking about the Lincoln sadto hear that the Quinn stable had to put Levitate down the other day hard couple of weeks with that and the passing off Cockney Sparow
