'Eyesore' former Edwin Davis department store in Hull targeted for legal action over repairs please log in to view this image A third high-profile derelict building is being targeted for enforcement action by Hull City Council. The authority has issued a legal notice on the former Edwin Davis department store in Bond Street, city centre. It closed in the 1970s and, apart from a brief stint as a nightclub in the 1990s, has been empty ever since. The city council has already served section 215 notices on the old Lord Line trawler company offices on St Andrew's Dock, west Hull, and the crumbling former New York Hotel in Anlaby Road. http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/8216...tory-26004303-detail/story.html#ixzz3RRFRshKz These 215 notices seem to be a waste of time, the New York Hotel belongs to a company who've never filed accounts, have no assets and will pay nothing towards either maintaining or demolishing the building. The Lord Line and Edwin Davis buildings both belong to Manor Properties, who also spend nothing on maintaining their buildings. The Lord Line looks like it's falling down, it needs action now, the council have dragged their feet for years and it's likely to go the same way as the New York and be declared unsafe before anyone manages to do anything with it. Surely there are systems in place for something more severe than a 215 notice to save these buildings?
Why the indecent haste? It only closed in the 1970s. There are still the only remaining bomb sites in Europe 70 years after the end of the war. You can't understand why all those East Riding people didn't want to be run by the same people responsible for these state of affairs, can you?
Did you hear the visionary Councillor responsible for leisure and tourism in Hull, the one and only, Terry Geraghty on the Dave Burns show yesterday? He was responsible for bringing the ice area and ice hockey to Hull in the 80's when he was, unbelievably, the leader of Humberside County Council. He admitted for the very first time yesterday that ice hockey has never really caught on in Hull and even when they had a team capable of winning trophies and appearing at Wembley, the crowds never went above 1,500. Amazing that it has taken so long for someone to actually admit how low the crowds have been. Today they get 1,000 on a good day and 'sometimes a lot less' and over a 1,000 when the away team brings a few supporters. He wants to build a new ice area combined with a swimming pool in the middle of the city centre and the bomb site on Bond Street (see above) is his preferred site, but funds are lacking. So his back up plan is to improve the existing ice area. 'As a place to attract the really big acts' His visionary plans is for a 5,000 seat arena. Wow.
I went passed it a few weeks ago for the first time is years, and it is really an eyesore, they should be made at least to make it safe and respectable to look at.
It's way beyond frustrating that such clueless bellends are making the decisions that will shape the future of our city.
I've said it before and will undoubtedly say it again, how the **** such an obvious idiot, along with Brady, came to hold such a position of power and authority is totally beyond the realms of reality. Obviously that 'champion of the working classes' twatface Prescott would have had some influence in it, and no doubt he or/and his family benefitted from it somewhere down the line.
So we need some ideas to generate some funds for the purposes of building a city centre indoor arena. I'll start the ball rolling. How's about selling that big arena on the circle, which generates no money, then reinvest that money into the indoor arena. Too simple?
I am sure you will remember when someone informed the HDM that at one ice hockey game when freebies and councillors were taken out of it something like 28 people had actually paid. Something quickly pulled and buried by news of something like a story about 3 Hull City fans being ejected from a game . ( And if anyone finds that hard to believe in the section about what happened 10, 15, 25 years ago they mentioned, amongst the great memories of the rugby teams, it was the anniversary of 3 fans being arrested at the Grimsby match. Yet strangely never mentioned on any occasion the anniversary of the Good Friday Battle of the Boulevard when more people were hospitalised than in the who of Hull City's history.) I wonder what Geraghty's vision of a really big act is? He probably thinks that the Stones and The Beatles appeared at the ABC and it didn't hold that many so a 5,000 seat arena means we could get the world's biggest acts.
Sadly the atmosphere generated at the Ice Hockey is quite often better than most of what ive heard at the KC :/
I've heard a few people say it's a decent night out, I thought I might give it a try, but I get enough grief about the amount of time I spend on City related stuff, without trying another sport.
Not really sure what your point is here? There isn't funding for a new ice arena/swimming pool so he's looking at alternatives. One is to improve the current ice arena (which it desperately needs) and in the process enhance its ability to host concerts/events. What's wrong with that?
Its all about being sustainable, spending 10's of millions on a 12,000 seat white elephant isn't what the city needs at the moment.
What's happened to that hotel development with the 3,500 capacity music/conference venue attached, next to Prinny Quay? I know there was a pie in the sky 8,000 capacity thing for the Brits/Baftas, but I thought the smaller one was close to going ahead?
I googled that and saw 3 articles from HDM. First one 8000 capacity, then 5000 the last one 2500 . All nearly a year ago. Whats happened?
The 8,000 and 5,000 were actually the same one(it was 5,000 seats, but could take 8,000 with 3,000 standing), but that was a separate one to the 3,500 one with the hotel, which had a specific site and named developers... http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/New-...hotel-create/story-21645578-detail/story.html
It is, so I presume they'd need special permission, as both that and the building near it are grade two listed.
