The iconic Andrea Pirlo has named his greatest Champions League XI, failing to pick himself... Gianluigi Buffon Philipp Lahm Maldini Fabio Cannavaro Cafu Paul Scholes Gattuso Xavi Kaka Lionel Messi Inzaghi Quite some team.
It's a Champions League XI and he's got the fourth best all time goal scoring record and the second best is also in the team.
I think people are questioning the inclusion of the injury prone, bit part journeyman Simone over perennial goalhanger extraordinaire Pippo. I'd have had Raul over either any day.
Well the XI just said "Inzaghi" so I assumed it was the one that played most of his career for AC, rather than the one that split his career between AC and AC.
Without checking I'm not sure Simone ever played in the Champions League. He possibly did when at SS. Edit - I just checked and (according to Wiki) Simone indeed did, scoring 9 in 11 including a record equalling (at the time) 4 in one match. Maybe he did mean him?
He played a lot of Champions League games for Lazio, in his first season there he scored nine in just eleven games.
I can't think I'd have seen him play otherwise. Seems he has 18 champions league goals. I just find it odd which players in that list have one name and which have two (whether this is down to Pirlo or OLM).
I'd suggest picking Gattuso over him means there was probably some kind of Milan vs Juve spat between them as the time. He has picked 4 Milan players... Even Nedved should be in ahead of Kaka or Gennaro really. Did Pirlo and Zidane face each other in the final at Old Trafford?
He takes the piss out of one of them in his book for eating baby biscuits all the time so maybe that's the one he left out
Zidane scored that class volley for Real the previous year, so no. Agree on Nedved over Kaka/Gattuso. Always seemed underrated to me.
