My wife and I just spent this weekend back home, well, my home, the north east.

My ex father-in-law was buried today, the finest man I've ever known.

Spending the last 2 days with family and friends, before today, made it a wonderful, bittersweet weekend.

Everywhere we went, everyone who served us, catered for us, guided us when memory failed me, were fantastic.

I'm so proud to hail from the north east. It's the home of some truly wonderful people.

There's a warmth and generosity of spirit in the north I'd forgotten existed. We have so much to be proud of, and to take pride in. We should never forget that, wherever life takes us.

Cheers mate, you're a real gentleman!

The assumption I'd always end up coming home had faded many years ago. It's now firmly back on the agenda. My wife loves everything about the north east so it's definitely not out of the question.

My son lives in the midlands now he moved down there when he was 12 - he's 32 now and last year when he visited me with their lass and the bairn he took him out in the pram to get him off to sleep. He was amazed when he came back to the house as the dozen or so people who passed him on the walk all said "morning" to him. He reckoned he would have been lucky to get one speaking at home - mind I said they must know him down there! The North East is a great place to live

No mate. Already back home chilling with a beer. Back to work tomorrow unfortunately.

Just a shame the lads were away this weekend! I'd have blown the family out on Saturday afternoon and gone to the match!

She's a closet mackem already! She's a gooner but a couple of month ago, just after the lads had played, she asked, how did WE do? The look on her face when I cracked up was a picture!

We also come up, when we can, for the cricket and she's got some Durham shirts, so the jobs half done!

Cheers Funky. You're another genuine bloke I'd like to down a few beers with!

Almost everyone here are top blokes! Raising money for those 2 poor Geordie lads last year, this poor old guy who was mugged, the way you guys sort tickets out for each other, for strangers, unasked and without reward, is always humbling.

Our parents brought us up well.

Cheers mate. Though I wasn't strictly family after the divorce, it didn't matter to them. In fact we became closer. Special, special people.

I hope your situation will become a little clearer soon too mate, and that you get the holiday with your daughter that you've planned. If you're ex is as good as my ex is, you will. Best wishes.

I've been to a funeral today too.... I hope the weather was as nice at yours as here in Darlo.?
Sorry for your loss marra... And you're right to say "we are decent people" up here :emoticon-0148-yes:
At the 'wake' this afternoon, one of the party from York commented on a bagpipe playing busker out on the street. We had a whip round (£50) and got him entry into the Kings Head where he played for 30 mins... He was made up!
He did push his look by scoffing loads of grub and then enquiring about getting a job like <doh>

That will be Jay, one of my mincer chums. Mixed race, bald and wearing a kilt? That will have made his day that. Sounds like a ballsy thing Jay would do too

Deepest condolences for your loss too fella.
