I would not play two up top. Infact 4231 or 433 with Rooney as the striker. Fellaini or mata as the 10 in 4231 depending on opponent. Di maria left of a midfield 3.
Today LVG played 2 up top. You said Rooney was the better option in midfield than Mata. Disagree completely bcos Mata is far better in that role than Rooney. It's like saying Aguero should play in midfield (instead of Silva) and lets have Dzeko and Bony up top. To be honest this game was tailor made for some one like Mata. Someone who can get shift the ball from left to right quickly and get some composure in midfield. He could have made these penetrating passes missing in the first half. Fat Sam calling united 'long ball United '. Love it.
Mata in midfield is too risky. Rooney is far more disciplined and has much better stamina. It should never be a choice between the two in reality but it is. Our midfielders are Blind, Herrera and Di maria.

Have t Have to agree with UIR for once. No way you can play Mata in Rooney's position, right centre midfield in a diamond. You would get overrrun. You could play him as a no 10 or the tip of the diamond instead of Tia Maria though

Yes, just don't expect him to do any midfield work, consider him a no 10 behind two strikers Those strikers and midfielders will have to work their arses off to cover him! Mata is such a luxury player you may have to go 4231 to accommodate him in some games and just play one up top
None of them are midfielders. Not of the kind Rooney is playing as anyway. All I am saying is if it has to be done, and for some reason it has to he done, then Rooney is a better option.
