I'd posit that a big reason for joining up is economic - Scousers, Geordies, Taffs, etc

The Armed Forces are "voluntary" in the same respect as any other carear choice is voluntary.

Don't get me wrong, I am not one who decries the armed forces. Far from it. But joining up is not a heroic act in itself. It is an admirable act though. Throwing the word about devalues truly heroic acts carried out by the forces or other people. If you get involved in hyperbole where do you go from there? Quill described someone as one of the worst people in the world the other day. Some minor female politician. Worse than those in ISIS, Boko Haram, those who murdered over 43 Mexicans? Or, seeing she hasn't murdered anyone, worse than any murderer?

Does the full article clarify whose armed forces and in which era? There's a few old fellas out there unhappy with the Japanese armed forces for a kick off.

Joining the Army does not make you a hero, but choosing a role that will or could put your life on the line is different.

DMD is wrong, all combatants can be hero's, it just "to who" that makes the difference.

They can be brave. But to be a hero requires doing something heroic.

I was just about to post the same. Is being a politician not a profession anymore? Every single one of these polls that I've seen has politician as number one for either 'Most Distrustful Profession' or 'Most Despised Profession'.

Also, coppers? Yeah, some of them like the ones involved with the Hillsborough disaster or the ones involved with the Rotherham rape scandal are utter twats, but generally? I'm not sure.

The Armed Forces are usually respected for their service; I can't argue with that even if some of them act unprofessionally during war, but our lads are considered some of the most professional out there, aren't they?

I definitely agree about cold callers at call centres, and I say that as someone who worked at one for a while. I'd hate me for that.

Exactly, so how can police be less respected/more hated than bankers if they were asking general population rather than a targeted audience?

I'm not keen on five a day co-ordinations myself for. Or heads of visitor destination.

Surprised Leicester city manager didn't make top 5 given the comments on the Pearson gone thread!
