Off Topic Iced up windscreens ......

........ this might just help someone

Our lass got sick of the morning pantomime of me stomping around, swearing & threatening to pour the kettle on my icy screen.

So she dug out an old hot water bottle and stuck it on the dash ...... result!

By the time we went out the screen & side windows were clear, the van was warm & off we went.

I've also heard of a few people leaving cars outside, running with the keys in, and come out to see an empty space.

Not a great start to the day.

 

Windscreens are made to be able to not crack even when you pour boiling water on them in a frost. Wouldn't have the nerve to do it myself mind.

 

If you've had a stone hit your screen it can cause a flaw even if it's not visible .... hot water can cause it to crack.

Still, I wouldn't have the nerve to risk it either way.

 

De-icer tends to do the trick for me like..

I'll be giving that a try - how marvellously simple a solution with the added benefit of getting some heat in to the cabin until the engine warms up.

I often use warm water, rather than boiling - anything around body temp usually does it.

 

The trouble is that it usually freezes up again.

tbh our lass grabs the hot water bottle and puts it on her lap when we set off ...... she's not daft.

 

Tepid water always does the trick. De-icers are crap in anything worse than a mild dew!!!

 

Just put on my heated windscreen - easy!

 

Does your ignition have to be on?

 

Yes - you have to have your engine running

 

So you either have to leave your car running or sit in a cold car until it warms up ......... Mr's Smug's system is technologically superior

 

Nah, real technology...
While eating breakfast, I press a little button on my remote and a heater(uses a small amount of diesel) starts up. Warm car, engine and clear windscreen by the time I get out.

 

What are you driving? Or is remote what you call your missus?

 

Skoda Superb, but I think it's not an option in the UK.

I know Range Rovers have them. You can fit them "after-market", Webasto is one make. Doubt I'd survive if I tried to push my luck and get my dearest to go out...

yeah well you are probably about as out-of-date as your idea of high tech

 

Skoda use out of date VW technology ...........Skoda is never high tech or state of the art whatever the ads try to tell you

 

My mate's got a skoda and loves it. Im probably like Smug, of a generation not prepared to park one outside the house for the neighbours to see.

It's not a snobbery thing mate ...... they're just cobbled together from 'proper' manufacturers.
