Before Defoe we would of got beat today. Point away to Swansea is smashing. 2 should be mid table teams balanced out.
Ki was never off side, but it was never a freekick which led to a goal so that evened it out for me. Very happy with a point today though. The big lad Gomis, he reminds me so much of Kenwyne Jones. All the attributes to be a top striker, but lazy and sluggish and appears to lack the work ethic the league demands.
Replay shows he was slightly offside mate so the decision was correct. He was not as far off side as the other major chance that you missed first half that the linesman missed though..
Living up to your name I see. We dominated the game and played some lovely stuff at times but Defoe is class and as others have said he makes a difference in your team. A game we should have won easily but that's football.
And a game you would have surely lost if the ref hadn't somehow overlooked a blatant penalty for us..
Nice little run of form we're in here like, at a great time. And still in the cup. 10th and a cup semi or better, aye I'll have that.
All positive mate. Getting Defoe and having Ricky actually kick a ball has changed the whole complexion. We look a threat now and that's a stark comparison to 6 weeks back. Still defending well as well, really pleasing.
well, you could argue that defoe has done more good in about one month than altidore had done in about a season and a half.
Poyet pleased with Swansea display Published: 07 February, 2015 by Oscar Chamberlain Head coach reflects on Liberty Stadium stalemate. Gus Poyet was pleased with Sunderland’s performance following a 1-1 draw against Swansea City. Jermain Defoe opened the scoring with a thumping strike before the break, but former loanee Ki Sung Yeung returned to haunt the Black Cats with a second-half equaliser. The result saw Sunderland extend their unbeaten run to three following victories over Burnley and Fulham, with a return to Wearside coming up on Tuesday when QPR travel to the Stadium of Light. Speaking to safc.com post-match, the head coach explained the importance of building on recent results. “I think that it was key [building on recent results] and we’re disappointed because we were ahead, but we needed to finish the week on a high and make sure we took something into Tuesday’s game. “It was a great game for us with no excuses and confidence is high, so let’s hope we can go and win on Tuesday against QPR. “I was very, very pleased with the first-half performance,” continued Poyet. “I thought that we quite in control and passed the ball to go forward and find the goal, so the players were feeling good at half time but it was a matter of maintaining that level which is difficult when you’re away from home and the opposition plays. “Unfortunately we conceded the goal and the way Ki scored was not like us, but that is football and we need to learn from it so overall I’m pleased.” Poyet also hailed the lift that goalscorer Defoe provides within the team, after the forward once again demonstrated his supreme prowess in front of goal. “The performance in the opening 45 minutes was what we were hoping for after the way that we played on Tuesday at Fulham. “I needed the team to believe in the passing game in terms of keeping the ball, moving around and creating attacking situations, so that you can then rely on top scorers and special players because when you’ve got Jermain you know that sooner or later he will score.” He added: “That gives the rest of the boy’s great confidence because you know that if you do good in your job and your game you will have somebody who is going to make the difference. “It was very welcome and it was a shame that we gave the goal away, but overall I’m pleased with today’s performance.”
1: Observaton. I was at the game. 2: Stats! 40% possession, 4 shots, 1 on target as opposed to 60% possession, 16 shots with 7 on target. I'm not 'bitter' as some poster said above because we did the same to Southampton last week. In fact our stats were a lot worse I think but that's football. So yes it was a game we should have won, at least that's the way I saw it. As Monk said you didn't create anything apart from the goal but football can be cruel if you don't take those chances. Defoe is class and should get you to safety this season. Good signing.
But were you, as the home team, so dominate that a win was deserved, or just slightly better and progressive as you expect from a home team?
Possession means nothing in football, its goals that count. You can have all the possession you want in your own half, you are not going to win many games from there. It is pointless singling any player out as the reason behind a result, they are in the team to do that job whether it be make saves, tackle, assist or score. I can recall Swansea playing at our place a couple of years ago and dominating possession along your eighteen yard line and we beat you 2-0. The only stats that matter is the final score
I only mentioned stats because I was asked what my criteria was when I said we 'should have won'. It's a fair criterion along with observation. Neither you nor I need to over-analyse it. Most of us have said a similar thing about our team from time to time. I included the possession stats for the sake of completeness but I thought someone would mention that. I notice you didn't mention the shots on target. Still think we should have won it and if you're honest you would too. I agree with you though it's the score that matters in the end, no argument there.
Sorry Mrs Muggins, but if the ref had gave us what was a definite penalty, I firmly believe there would have been no way back for you, so forgive me for disagreeing with you..
Never saw the game mate but would love to have Ki back, think he'd be the final piece of the jigsaw (for now)
