To be fair, RVN went on to do well. But I agree he is good at selling players when they are done.

    So true.

SAF is one of the best managers the sport has ever seen. He's a clever, clever ****er, and he'll only ever sell players when the time is right and when it benefits him the most.

If Sir Alex is selling, you don't want to be buying. At best, you get Nicky Butt and Alan Smith, and you pay top dollar for them

    Presumably having his head examined.

Works just as well as it did with Nolan.

Ok, so would most fans prefer...?

    Simpson and Williamson for £2m
    O'Shea and Brown for £8m

It's a no brainer to me..... but be honest!

I think O'Shea and Brown are better than Willo but Simpson will be a decent long term prospect.

If Brown can stay Injury free (and that is the big worry) then he will be a class act i believe, and O`Shea can cover all the back 4 and DM, last 2 seasons we have had lots of injuries to our defence (last season was the whole bloody squad) so hopefully with these 2, we are sort of covered, but like i said, Brown needs to stay fit.

I really cant see a problem with them tbh.

Buying 30/31 year olds and giving them 4+ year contracts seems a bit senseless to me really. Especially when they're well past whatever prime they had.

I wouldn't mind O'Shea so much. Not necessarily to go straight into the first team, but he'd be there or there abouts and would be great cover. Brown is just beyond me… Hes only ever done 30+ games in one of the 13 premier league seasons. Yet, I'd assume safc are buying these to start in the first 11 along with bardsley and bramble? And leaving Onouha alone at City…

Either way, it's hardly building for the future.

Well we had one of the youngest squads in the PL last season, and maybe that was part of the problem, it was a bit too young, so getting some experience in is what we need, especially at the back, its not like all of our players are 30+ that we are buying, its 2. But they can pass on a crap load of knowledge to our younger players, and a winning mentality (hopefully) which lets be honest we havnt had for the past 70 years or so lol (baring 1 cup)

He's who comes to mind immediately for me too! Although maybe if he hadn't have left Man U when he did, he wouldn't have turned his career around? Any longer and it could've permanently killed his confidence

I'd have O'Shea but not on longer than a 2 year deal, good cover and still has a couple of good seasons in him. Wouldnt want Brown personally though.

Thing is, you know SAF wouldnt be so quick to sell if he thought they still had much to offer.

Not impressed with Sunderlands business so far with exception of Wickham. Brown is injury prone, error prone but has a bit of quality. O Shea is average. Gibson average too (I know they haven't signed him yet but it looks likely), Gardner average, Larrsson average. Dong and Westwood I couldn't say. Plenty numbers but a lack of quality. The midfield area is what would concern me. cattermole is crying out for a ball player alongside him. Who do they sign? Gardner! Bizarre.

I think someone has already noted that Ferguson is the master of getting rid at the right time. The fans have wanted O Shea and Gibson gone for a while. Brown might do ok if he can stay fit. He's just been pushed out by better players (Vidic, Ferdinand, Evans, Jones, Smalling). Personally I see no reason for us to sign Brown. I think we have two better centre halfs in Colo and Taylor. Brown is better than Willo but he ain't leaving Man U to warm the bench!

Just signed for £1 million, which is a good deal considering his age

According to the Beeb, we're also in for Gibson. I hope not, we have plenty of midfielders. We need Forwards and Defenders dammit

What an absolutely ridiculous deal. <laugh><doh>

As I said on their board, almost 32, very injury prone, and he's just been given a FOUR YEAR bumper deal to pay him until he's almost 36.

He really has hit the jackpot, just like Nolan did at West Ham.
