I've just read that and the sentence is nowhere near appropriate to the crime . They should appeal and get a decent judge. The poor lad was trying to help, I don't think he'll bother again.

The verdict last week for the men who beat a lecturer on his doorstep in Wimbledon saw some of them getting 18 years. What's the difference in the cases that leads to such a variation in sentence?

This case was in Scotland, where they have a different judicial system.

To make up for being soft on assault, they're very strict on English people speeding.

I remember the 'battle of Walton Street' when a couple of dozen banned Huddersfield fans sat in George pub all afternoon then hid among the bushes outside the KC and battered the first people leaving the stadium. Old men, kids and women. When some City fans fought back the Huddersfield mob ran away and hid behind a protective police line. Humberside Police moved heaven and earth to claim it was an organised 'meet', sought the Hull people down and some received jail sentences of up to three years. No weapons were used. One Huddersfield fan was eventually tracked down and arrested, and 18 from Hull I recall.
Twelve months later another 'battle of Walton Street' took place. Two rival tribes of our ethnic brotherhood met on the same street and fought each other using knives, clubs and other weapons, according to the HDM. Some travelled from Leeds and the Midlands for this obviously organised meet.
I don't recall anyone getting jailed or even arrested.

Jesus Christ - those injuries are horrific. Amazing that he didn't suffer brain damage. 18 months? I hope he gets a 'special' friend inside.
