Erm, Mark E Smith went to great lengths during Madchester to point out that The Fall werent a Manchester band, they were a Salford band.
It's not perdantic at all. I was going to point out The Verve being from Wigan too, it's miles from Manchester. You wouldnt call a band from Scunthorpe a Hull band.
Its not pedantic, just accurate, I don't think people from Wigan or Bolton would appreciate it if you said they were from Manchester. Can't be bothered to put up the links but wikipedia any of the bands I mentioned and it will tell you where they formed.
And if you look on the link I put up, it considers them a part of the Manchester music scene. Maybe they weren't formed in the city, but that doesn't mean they weren't a part of that music scene.
Poor comparison - Scunthorpe are in Lincolnshire whereas we are in East Yorkshire, whereas Manchester and Wigan are both in Greater Manchester.
It doesn't really matter where they were formed, they're all bands heavily associated with the Manchester music scene and it's just a Friday night music thread ffs, it really doesn't matter.
True, but you might as well add the Sex Pistols in there as well then, they played a massive role in the Manchester music scene too.
It was more a tongue in cheek remark that some have taken exception to, of course it doesn't really matter.
What has a county got to do with it? Scunthorpe is nearer to Hull than Wigan is to Manchester. Ok then, if you want to go down that route a Goole band wouldnt be called a Hull band.
If you've got an hour and a half to space, this is a decent watch... Factory Records: Manchester from Joy Division to Happy Mondays (BBC 2007)
