On a recent trip to India (where the in-laws stem from) I found myself in a street (food) market with some relatives and they ordered 4 different types of egg curry...I felt so sorry for the kids playing in the sewers the next day!
But is there no standard labelling of what is halal/kosher/free ranger/organic and what not. I can't speak for everyone here, obviously, but I'd never put in that much effort to find out if it wasn't readily available.
"you could mix 50 bits of halal chicken with 50 bits of free range and I'd separate them perfectly 50/50, even in a marinade, I'd have to taste them obviously. " Nice trick that one Terry but you are unique if you can .......even though you think you can. A few years ago a group of b*stards were jailed for cleaning up rotten chickens that were destined for animal food and selling the meat to supermarkets. It wasn't the customers who complained about the flavour . A couple of years ago there was the horse meat scandal when some products were found to contain 100% horse meat . It wasn't the customers who noticed the difference in flavour. I used to keep chickens and sold loads of free range eggs. Everybody could tell the difference in flavour......except me. People delude themselves..........and of course don't forget 9out of 10 can't tell stork from butter.
I've no idea mate, I rarely eat Indian food, although this thread has made me want it. I guess most 'Italian' takeaways are run by Turks and Pakistani's round by mine so that would make sense. I'm sure there's some run by Indians though, that won't be hard to locate. Some/most people aren't bothered mate, I am particularly bothered. I go out of my way to ascertain the origins of the food I put in my mouth. I only eat Free Range or Organic chicken and eggs. I get my chicken from the same place every time, unless I'm buying Kosher when her family are over, in which case I go to a Kosher butcher. I don't have to worry about labels etc.
I've worked with hundreds of Indians throughout my career, most being very good cooks as well as a lot of travelling lads tend to be, out of necessity. Almost all of them rarely eat meat of any description, opting for fish and veg instead.
I'd never eat anything processed like that unless I was pissed and going for a kebab or something, the horse meat thing didn't bother me for that reason. I can spot a barn/caged egg a mile off, they ****ing stink and make me gag. Like I say, I eat only free range or organic, the texture is worlds apart not to mention the ****ing volume of water and chemicals that come out of the **** chicken when cooked. Simple experiment mate, if you will, cook a full Free-range chicken and cook a full battery chicken side by side, get the same weight ideally to begin with. Once you've taken all the meat off after cooking, have a quick smell of the chicken carcasses, the free-range one will be fairly odourless but the battery one will make you not want to eat for the next 24 hours.
My local curry house does a Bengal Balti, I had it with Paneer, it was buenos. I really need to get off this thread, my diet consists of steamed chicken and veg for the next 9 days and my will power is awful.
Nee bother mate but like I say, I'll stick to pork products, fish & shellfish. That way I know I'm avoiding halal ****e.
Talking of shellfish mate. I once had probably the most expensive Biryani ever when working offshore in Angola about 6 years ago. One of the fitters used to knock up a Prawn Biryani twice a week and it was proper lush as well. Anyway, this week we had no prawns and the (Portuguese) gaffer running the job for Chevron was gutted and decided to make some calls to surrounding platforms, nee prawns to be had anywhere. He widened his search to surrounding Drill Rigs and one of them came up trumps and offered us a 5kg bag in exchange for some cases of coke (cola) The gaffer then booked a chopper from onshore to do the exchange and bearing in mind it cost $5,000 just to get one of them off the ground plus $500 a minute flying time and we were 35 minutes out from shore. End result was ****loads of very, very expensive prawns arrived and the fitter did the business. The gaffer told me the next morning that it cost around $800 dollars a serving
I agree with Terry - as we're also careful when it comes to buying and eating chicken, some of the crap sold as poultry that's in stores nowadays can contain arsenic, antibiotics and other carcinogenic substances - best to avoid
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2623879/We-Muslims-appalled-sale-halal-meat-stealth.html Quite an interesting article from a British Imam's point of view mate, worth a read. The guy basically implies that these methods are going on to please a secular group of Islamists who have misinterpreted the Koran 'guidelines' on Halal meat. Essentially, it's religion's refusal to evolve again at the root of the issue, these people seem to think that just because it was done 100's of years ago like that (because that was the only way then) that's how 'god' intended it to be forever.
A very good read that from an Imam who is trying to drag his religion from the middle ages into the 21st century. Hats off to the bloke. Like I say, I had no problems with eating horse meat in Holland & Germany but I knew what I was getting. That bloke has it spot on - the meat should be labelled as halal or non-halal for the benefit of all concerned.
