I realise most of not all of you won't be arsed to read the link.

    http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/01/artificial-intelligence-revolution-1.html

The link is merely part 1 of a two parter. Which having spent the last hour and half reading has blown my mind and freaked me out.

The general gist of it is we will reach AGI in about 20 years. Then ASI sHortly after then it's quite likely we will all die.

Not quite no. More by mistake really. If you can be arsed read it. Part two is the bit where it discusses the possible outcomes of what happens after ASI.

    No.

People of our age have nothing to fear. Maybe someday it will be a cause for concern but we've got decades/centuries before that's the case.

Anyone that thinks it's a danger is a major *****.

Read the article Toby. Conservative estimates reckon we will get to the singularity as its called when computers are better than us is 2030. From then on it could all he down hill.

I studied AI at Uni and follow what's happening, we're YEARS away from it being a threat to humanity.

It's just a distraction from the real problems we're facing, and it makes good news stories.

I didn't read it all as I did not have time but the first bit was interesting. My only comment really is that I don't see things progressing on a logarithmic scale. I think we are now seeing development on a reducing level. This is due to the fact that there are fewer really big discoveries to be made. The really big ones, flight, radio, computers etc are essentially 20th century discoveries and most of what we see today are extensions of these basics. So I think it is far more likely that a visitor from today to 2250 would be far less shocked that one from 1750 to today would be.

You could say that all inventions are extensions of the discovery of the wheel or fire. There's SO much stuff coming out, the world will look a lot different in a few years.

Shame it's only going to benefit a fraction of mankind :frown:

Will this include inventing Championship referees who actually know what is and isn't a red card offence especially in the 28th second of the game? Number 1 on my wish list <steam>
