    World Cup 2022
Heat could cause 2022 World Cup in Qatar to be a game of three halves• Qatar engineer claims games could comprise three periods
    • Fifa denies that any discussions on the matter have taken place

Fifa could allow matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to be played over three 30-minute periods if temperatures in the stadiums became dangerously high for the players.

Michael Beavon, a director of Arup Associates who helped to develop the zero-carbon solar technology that will cool the 12 stadiums, told delegates at the Qatar Infrastructure Conference in London that the air-cooling would maintain a comfortable temperature of around 24 degrees Celsius in the stadiums.

"There is a moderate risk of heat injury to the players between 24C-29C but if you go above that you have high and extreme risk of injury. The one thing Fifa do say, although it is for guidance, is if it's 32C they will stop a match and play three 30-minute thirds rather than two 45-minute halves.

"The reason would be to re-hydrate the players before they could carry on playing. That of course would play havoc with TV schedules and those kind of things. The commitment from Qatar was to provide conditions in the moderate band, so that matches would go ahead and be played as normal. Matches have to be played at an acceptable temperature and in safety so that Fifa do not intervene."

However a Fifa spokesperson told Reuters that such a drastic change to the way the game is not something that was on the governing body's agenda. "This possibility has not been discussed," the spokesperson said. "In any case, this would require a change in the Laws of the Game, and therefore would have to be analysed and approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in the first place."

Why not have time-outs while we're at it. Maybe some scantily clad water ladies.

Maybe Blatter should have thought of these things before he took the wonga.

After years of continually been let down by our so called superstar footballers, I generally have lost all interest in International football to be honest.

It's been done many times before, but in the old club vs. country debate there's only one winner in my eyes (and they wear red and white!)

With so much corruption at FIFA it's hard to get over excited about the WC. The best thing for me is the opportunity that it provides for small countries like mine, if it makes it there, to get exposure to the European scouts for our players. It gives the youth out here the chance of a dream to follow if there good enough. Otherwise it’s just an incredible waste of money.

I'm a Scot expat in Australia (Oz citizen), and although us far superior sportsmen this side of the Tasman have a good natured rivalry with our small feathered kiwi buddies, there is a mutual respect between both nations (bar the Bledisloe Cup of course). I love to see the Kiwi's do well in all sports against the Northern Hemisphere teams (except Scotland!), and I know a fair few kiwi's who are the same with the Aussie's. We are so remote down here we need to stick together!

Watching the WC last year, I was at work on a oil rig, and I made sure that despite the fact the Kiwi games were on at like 3am, that I got up to watch them before going on my lovely 16 hour shift. One of the the highlights of the WC was the way the kiwi's took it to the cheating Italians. The Italian i watched the game with didn't agree tho... I want NZ to be in the next one, and to do just aswell. Might help the Pheonix do better in the A-League aswell :p

Spot on. The ONLY undefeated team in the entire tournament. Unfortunatly not one contract so our captain fantastic, Ryan Nelson of Blackburn Rovers remains our most prominant export. The U17's have just finished in Mexico going out in the round of 16 & the U20's kick off in Colombia later this month . Give us 5/7 years & we'll be on fire!

Not true. Shane Smeltz... who scored the goal against those diving, greasy Italian bastards has just progressed up to joining the mighty Perth Glory. Not even playing for Barcelona is that prestigious.

Pfft! You watch out mate, the Glory will win it this year. Back to the 'Glory' days of the old NSL when we had the god that is Bobby Despotovski. Least you only consider it a sideways move... a backwards one would be joining the Pheonix :p

Keno had a young lad (about 19 or so but forgot his name)trail when at Sunderland (played a friendly pre-season in Ireland) but he's fallen off the radar since, were abouts unknown but certainly not played for the senior team. Rory Fallon was at Plymouth Argile before being released when they went bust. The players we have are not EPL standard yet but the young guys are playing in other Europrean leagues & hopefully will step up.

Haven't you guys got Robbie Fowler? The Phoenix, don't make me laugh. The only thing there any good for is showing the lad how not to keep your position on the field.

We had Fowler. Did very well for us, he has still got the goods, even at 36ish. Unfortunately he wants to get in to coaching, so he's moved back to the Bin Dippers to take up some sort of coaching role. Shame really, would have been awesome down here this year. Player/coach type of job. But guess he was sick of the sun, sub-tropical weather, and hot bitches in bikini's. Never been to the 'Pool, but does it really top that??
