Unfortunately, we may have to turn the page even on last season. Last year, Bertrand on loan would have been kind of a joke. This year, it's not a bad move.
I have some riveting tales about my time ship building Currently there are only 7 clubs in England really more appealing than Saints. They can only have so many players, so there will be options for us. If players see us as a stepping stone then so be it. These are marriages of convenience and success for one means success for us. Bertrand is a good player and low risk. Left back was our most urgent signing seeing as we only had one with no league experience, so we had to get Ryan in asap to allow him time to settle into the team. Clearly our attempts at signing a permanent player had reached a sticking point and were going to endanger our chances in the early games. We may still end up getting a permeant left back at a price more acceptable to the club and if that's the case then that player and Bertrand can fight it out for a place in the team. As for Targett he can wait out another year in the u21s. He is 18 and I really don't think another season of u21 football and some cup matches would be holding him back.
I'm keeping an open mind until he has played at least a dozen games, after all, Lovren came here amid reports that Lyon fans didn't rate him after an indifferent season for them. I'm sure that we will see substantial money spent on strengthening areas of the squad where we are weak, but the amount that we spend is no guarantee to a player's success at the club and we have to be realistic in our targets.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, we can gaze upon this thread and laugh. Who was a prognosticator? Who was a prat? And let this be a lesson to all that the club staff do indeed know more than most of us. (Not me though, I was an optimist!)
I came out of that thread quite well, but only because I am an optimist and I love everyone who pulls on a Saints shirt.
He was crap for Villa. But has been good for us, so proved me wrong. His eyes still freak me out tho.
Not to be taking the piss out of people who thought he'd be **** though. I just think it's healthy now and for the future to employ a little hindsight and think about how bloody right the club got 95% of it during the summer. We might need some of that thought again in future.
I cannot fathom out why I never made a comment on this thread, missed a good jibe here i.e. Nobody likes Tommy Forecast!
I miss Dan. Man there were some weird casualties of the summer's freakouts, meltdowns and lunacies. I remember those saying that the board could never be trusted again after Lambert was sold before the new manager came in. It seems ludicrous now, but back then it's genuinely how people felt. And really, for no other reason than fear. We were all very afraid of the worst case scenario and many thought the new board had not shown any sign of dedication towards the betterment of the club. I always felt the signs were there that they were not looking to **** us around, just in minor changes that were apparent around the club. Plus Les was always here, he stayed, he's not in football to destroy a perfectly good football club, no matter what he gets paid. If Les ever ups and leaves in a big flounce of controversy, then we can panic.
Never thought we were being asset stripped because it made no sense to do so, but I did think we would struggle with all those sales.
